H/P Media Center 2005 Edition Computer

Post by lars63 »

I bought a H/P Media Center Computer from Fry's a few days back I can get updates from Windows Update but I can't download the new I/E to this machine I can't download any of the patches for Microsoft Office this machine also has a spiffy little desktop dancer "Amanda" is the one inlcuded on this machine I'll post the link to the download page I can't download any of the other dancers here is the message I get when I try. Can someone clue me in?

Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at download.microsoft.com.

* Check the address for typing errors such as
ww.example.com instead of
http://www.example.com

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

this happens with I.E. as well

Could someone give me a hint?

Microsoft Office is included on the machine I was going to buy it on line but I get the same message for that too *sigh* I have a cure for that one I will just go down to the local BB and buy it. Bought the Microsoft Office at BB today now I can't download any of the patches for Office guess I don't have a cure
Below is the link to the Dancers download page :

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/down ... ncers.mspx

I have a thread posted at another forum here is the lnk to that page:
Clicky

There is a little more there if you would like to take a look. Thanks for any advice you may have

I ordered the disks from H/P all you get with store bought computers is the operating system on a FAT32 partition of the hard drive. Suckie!!

The server and other machines work just fine I can download the Media Center desktop dancers and get the updates for Microsoft Office on those machines just not this one. I don't get it

Dancers: I wouldn't know where to begin to look
I've had the grand kids all day they came over to see that spiffy dancer that came with this machine *smile*.

I really didn't care so much about the dancers what bothers me is I can't update Microsoft Office on this machine. Its inlcuded on this machine as a sixty day trial my daughter talked me out of my old copy of Microsoft Office so was going to buy this on line I got errors like I posted, I gave up and went to Best Buy and bought a copy this silly machine won't let me download the security updates for the program

I wrote H/P about this they have suggested what you did. I probably won't be able to get back to this machine until tomorrow *after the grandkids leave* I will try all of that pluse some other suggestions H/P sent

+JuggerNaut+. AVG free antivirus found five Trojan Horse Downloader Agents.ETP on the server and removed them I'm assuming I don't have a problem on this machine. Besides the server is in the DMZ doesn't that protect your other machines on the network? *sigh* I'm not much at this kind of thing

I'll post tomorrow after the kids leave and I try some of the suggestions. Thank you and if you think of anything else I might try please post it up

Wait Lars, sign up at D-A-L at first, they've got great technical support there as well. Or if you want, I can ask for you, whichever way you prefer.

This is the main page:

http://www.d-a-l.com/help/

Pick the section that applies to your problem and let me know if you want me to ask for you.

Cheers.

Run some antispyware scans first using Spybot and Windows Defender. You could also run a second antivirus scan using TrendMicro's Housecall. Let us know the results.

These are the things I have tried since last night plus what was suggested
I can't download any Microsoft programs so Defender is out I get as far as the download page it validates my copy of Windows a link appears for the download I click the link and I get the error messages I posted at the beginning of this thread. This happens with Firefox and I.E.

I'm sure its something I have missed I been dealing with this since I bought the machine I'm tired of being shown how stupid I am. *smile*

You have all been wonderful but I think its time to let someone else take a look.

Step 1: A. Evaluate Environmental Conditions If the system is connecting to the Internet Service Provider (ISP) successfully but there is a cannot find sever error in IE, check the following environmental conditions to ensure that they are not the cause of the error:
1. Contact your ISP to verify that there are no network/server outages.
Try to visit the ISP's website.
2. Ensure that all cables and link lights are working properly.

3. Power both your system and your external modem down, disconnect ALL the modem cables and verify that the connectors are not loose or broken.

4. Reconnect the modem cables, power the modem back on, then power the system back on.
Connect to your ISP (if using a dial-up service) then double click the Internet Explorer icon to open a browser.
Your home page should be seen on the window that appears.

B. Clean Up Internet Explorer

7. Click Clear History.A new Internet Options window appears.
When asked Are you sure you want Windows to delete your history of visited Web sites?, click Yes.
C. Reset Internet Explorer Settings
To reset your Internet Explorer settings, complete the following steps:
1. Under the Programs tab, click Reset Web Settings. The Reset Web Settings window appears.
2. Click to remove the checkmark from the box titled Also reset my home page.

4. Click Ok to complete the resetting process.
5. Click Ok to close out the Internet Options window.
6. Close out your current Internet page, and open a new one by double clicking the Internet Explorer icon.
D. Remove Conflicting Internet Applications The installation of 3rd party Internet applications (ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security, Kazaa, BonziBuddy, etc...) may be causing the Page Cannot Be Displayed error that you are experiencing. Uninstall these programs one at a time to determine which one is causing the error.
E. When using an Internet browser (such as Internet Explorer or Netscape
Navigator) on an Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) client computer, you may receive any of the following error messages:
The Page cannot be displayed.
