I have AIDS
That is, An Interesting Debate Subject.
When the oil runs out will you adapt and go horse/bike/candles, or will you wig out and kill everyone over the limited supply of energy and car juice?

i know some hippies that have nearly finished building a totally self-sufficient house on their farm in cornwall - it should be finished by the time the world runs out of oil, assuming that's not for at least 30 years.
there's a bunch of shipping containers there that i was thinking about welding together/burying to make an underground hideout - had gotten as far as pacing out where the kitchen, living area and weapons storage were going to be - then i ran out of weed.

Yeah, I had something similar happen. But she sort of gasped when she saw that my dick had 'antidisestablishmentarianism' on it.MaCaBr3 wrote:Once a girl didn't want to suck my dick because she tought she saw the letters AIDS writting on my dick. After a while she laughed and said: Oww. Adidas!
Lame joke for today \o/
Good times.

I have the same problem. So I date dumb chicks who can't spell it. I tell them it's my VIN number for replacement parts and they take that as an invitation to ride it as hard as possible.Nightshade wrote:Yeah, I had something similar happen. We will not run out of oil. By no means would I say there is a limitless supply, but any calculations of the amounts left are based on known resources, not total resources.saturn wrote:yes, we have unlimited resources on this planet :icon27:Fender wrote:Not gonna happen, so no.
I think Fender’s point is, that it is not if or when we run out of oil, but when it becomes cost prohibitive to refine it. Sooner or later, the costs of exploration, mining and refining will be above other viable forms of energy and its production will slow accordingly and we will move on to the next thing, not run out.
I don't understand how people can have such a good grasp of market economics, and still not understand why this is not a feasible option.Maiden wrote:We will not run out of oil. Let's say that the point where it becomes cost prohibitive to extract and refine crude oil, will be when it's 300$-400$ a barrel. What that translates to is the end of cheap energy. It means that Exxon will no longer be able to make a profit by extracting and refining it, so they will stop supplying it to the rest of the world.
That does not mean, by extension, that we will be able to find energy sources for $300-$400 that will give us the same energy output as oil. The only way other energy will be supplied to us, is if there is a way it can be done with a large profit. If there were a way it could be done with a profit, then why haven't other energy sources already been developed by the energy companies, so they could continue their energy supply monopolies?
It may be that later down the road, companies will be able to make solar panels at a profit because they are in demand. But it's pretty hard to make solar panels without using oil at some point -- especially mass-producing them.
R00k, what you are forgetting is that this is not a sudden thing. The prices will rise gradually. During that time, research will happen and new products will emerge. For a while, they will be more expensive. Then oil will continue to rise, while the cost of the new methods will drop. We will NEVER see oil @ $300 a barrel. EVER. My guess is it will max out @ around $150 current day dollars 10+ years from now. But... what do I know

Not trying to be inflammatory here, but what DO you know? Honestly, what did you use to come up with those numbers?
And another thing that doesn't add up to me, is that everyone is basing our transition on market-driven technological advances that will allow us to deal with the change. But one thing that is left out of the equation is that all of our technological advances for nearly the past 100 years have relied on oil and/or used oil to function in their final form. We're living a post-modern life right now.

I could be wrong, but it sure looks like you are assuming constant demand here. Not sure I will be buying gas at 80 bucks a tub, let alone 300R00k wrote:I don't understand how people can have such a good grasp of market economics, and still not understand why this is not a feasible option.Maiden wrote:We will not run out of oil. And there are already viable options, it’s overcoming the monopoly power of the oil companies. The new eclipse has two electric engines that when run together produce more power than the gas one.

Maybe we're becoming too weak and this is just the beginning of the death of our race. As in, we rely on oil and technology to survive. Once we can't get any more oil, most technology will be brought to a hault. Once this happens, we're suddenly faced with failing safety-meaures and rules. Once most of our technology no longer works, we'll have to go back a good number of years in time in order to survive. There are too many people for this though. The reason we are able to have so many people living these days is because of technology. Once this is gone, we will probably see a decline in population. People probably just won't know what to do, and won't be able to adapt.
If this really does happen, I doubt we would die out as a species very easily. But I do think that our numbers would be decreased, and that we may possibly lose our spot as species #1 once again.

It's not just about cars. And even if it were, do you see enough of those being mass-produced from now on, enough for everyone who drives, without using oil to produce them?
OPEC, Enron, Exxon, all these companies are doing a damn good job of selling all the accessible oil as quickly as possible for maximum profit ("while the gettin's good"), and we're buying it up by the mouthful, racing toward our own recession.
And now the world's military giants are starting to really ramp up because of international tension, and they use a huge amount of oil just to stay in one place, let alone attacking and defending countries.
I agree that it's possible to avoid catastrophic changes, but not as long as people don't take the threat seriously. And no one is really taking it very seriously. Mainly because they don't want to.

I don't see an end of civilization crash because of Oil consumption. A global recession could be in the works though.

There is way to much fucking plastic in this world that is waste.
I don't know about you but I'm sick of all this theft-proof plastic packaging that entombs everything we buy and the endless supply of plastic bags that I can't seen to get a few of or use enough to stop accumulating.
Surely we can stop wasting energy and oil making these things and go back to renewable resuorces like paper from trees that can be replanted.
We also need to go back to local manufacturing. A lot of oil is wasted shipping raw materials half way around the world so kids and adults in slave labour wage jobs can make things and then ship them half way around the world again to consumers which is a huge waste of oil.
