Smoothing text on LCDs?

Post by KingManULTRA »

How is this done? I remember a link to Microsoft's site for this or something.

Right Click Desktop -> Properties -> Appearance Tab -> Effects -> Smooth edges using ClearType.

Does this affect the text in games as well?

Actually it does sometimes affect game text. I was playing motorcross madness 2 and with cleartype enabled the text was smudged out. Disabling it returned it back to normal. :o

btw, you're prolly talkin about this app, it adds a few extras in addition to the cleartype functionality built-into xp.

The game-text problem was prolly me being a noob and using cleartype on a crt though... :o

Why would the type of monitor you use have any bearing on ClearType?

Becuase font on a crt doesn't look nearly as bad as it does on an lcd with ClearType off.

Forgive my ignorance, but why?

*turns off ClearType*

Oh, ow! Damn...
I switched from a CRT to a LCD in the last few months and never bothered to look back at non-ClearType text until a moment ago. My guess is it has something to do with the way the monitor refreshes? I've always noticed how stuff jitters when I move windows around and whatnot. And checker-patterned mesh images get all funky when moved.

It is because the lcd has square pixels, while the crt makes pixels out of phosphors that are not perfectly square in configuration, thus the crt pixels have a smoothing effect built in, just like old TV's. Go look at a TV 1 inch away and you can see the phosphors.

Kind of funny.

The last time I played around ClearType was with my old LCD, which used an analog connection. Cleartype looked like crap on it.

Speed ahead to today, when I decided to play around with it again thanks to this thread. The effect is superb on my Dell 2001FPW using digital connection.

I guess the connection type does matter. :D
yea i've too been kind of thinking about maybe a new sig but sort of haven't come to quite a decision yet

Dunno why, but I found it extremely funny that it parsed this as an email link.

Probably because I'm at work 2.5 hours earlier than normal and have only had 1 cup of coffee. :s
