Teacher blows off part of hand trying to squash bug

"VENTURA, California (AP) -- A teacher who kept a 40 mm shell on his desk as a paperweight blew off part of his hand when he apparently used the object to try to squash a bug, authorities say....

..The teacher slammed the shell down in an attempt to kill something that was buzzing or crawling across the desk, said Fire Marshal Glen Albright."

Slams a 40 mm shell down hard onto his desk. Good one.

But there is a big double standard in terms of punishment for such things.

yeah, that's what I was getting at. Only this time it will be interesting to see because the Florida female teacher was attractive. This one is not, I wonder if it'll get the same public reaction or attention.

I would guess that since she is not attractive, the public will see this as more serious than the other case.

The 37-year-old Arkansas woman is the 3,496th teacher to be arrested this year on charges that she had sex with an underage student (in this case, a 14-year-old boy).

I'm not saying it's right for female teachers to do that sort of thing to young boys, but I do have to admit I understand the double-standard in those cases.
Obviously a grown woman should have the self-restraint to not have sex with a student, but you can bet that the majority of the time, it's the boy who is making the advances.

I remember a rumor going around when I was in middle school that one of the guys had banged our teacher. It was never anything more than a rumor (hell, who would have believed it at that age?), but frankly all the guys thought it was awesome - most everybody would have loved to have a crack at it.

If that guy had known he could sue the teacher for a cash settlement, I bet he would have still jumped on it and taken the money -- he was a kid, it never would have crossed his mind that he might be ruining someone's career for a few bucks and a good time.

I disagree. I do think that female teachers are less likely to physically pressure a male student into sex - as a lot of 13-14 year old males weigh as much as women do (obviously not this teacher though), but the teachers can still fuck with them psychologically. All kids that age are confused and fucked up in the head. Not to mention you're horny as fuck when you're 13-14 and don't know what's good for you until you blow a load and realize you just made a mistake fucking the girl. Although this to doesn't seem to apply for this case as it went on for a week.

Psychologically it's easy to fuck with kids at that age though. While male teachers seem like they'd be more apt to physically pressure female students, it's just as easy for female teachers to psychologically pressure male students if they wanted to.

I have a hard time believing that this 13 year old student hit on a fat 34 year old in an attempt to fuck her. And do you think it was his idea to bring the 12 year old to watch?

R00k, perhaps the double standard is justified but I wouldn't scoff at the potential for psychological harm to male students. As crtlnuke points out, the teacher is still in a position of authority and that authority can extend beyond the classroom and school in the minds of "abused" boys.

In that way, the sentencing gap between the sex (one could argue) should be shrunk accordingly, but not wiped out entirely.

To stay on topic: the guy didn't think it was a live round. Otherwise he most likely wouldn't have used it as a paperweight.

Luckily the bullet wasn't pointed at his face or towards any of the students in the classroom...

Seems like that is something a logical person would want to really double check first, especially for a 40mm round.
