Some interesting insights into bottled water

Post by Eraser »

Probably OLD! but I don't care.
Interesting article about bottled water:
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/01/opini ... nted=print
Nor is there any health or nutritional benefit to drinking bottled water over tap water. In one study, published in The Archives of Family Medicine, researchers compared bottled water with tap water from Cleveland, and found that nearly a quarter of the samples of bottled water had significantly higher levels of bacteria. The scientists concluded that "use of bottled water on the assumption of purity can be misguided." Another study carried out at the University of Geneva found that bottled water was no better from a nutritional point of view than ordinary tap water.
Clean water could be provided to everyone on earth for an outlay of $1.7 billion a year beyond current spending on water projects, according to the International Water Management Institute. Improving sanitation, which is just as important, would cost a further $9.3 billion per year. This is less than a quarter of global annual spending on bottled water.

People don't drink bottled water for its nutritional or health benefit (even though it's necessary to live...). People drink bottled water because it is portable, and some of the filtration methods or additives give it a distinct subtle, yet rewarding taste. For instance, Dasani water has more potasium than Evian (if I recall correctly).

It is also a healthier choice to buy a $1 bottle of water than the $1 bottle of diet coke. Rip off or not!

Finally, some places, like Las Vegas, have a very limited water supply. Buying water bottles at the stores ensures the health of the local flora and fauna without exhausting the ever depleting water supply.

You're right in all those points, but those points are missing the point of the article itself.

Wow, I'm an idiot. I just worked a 12 hour shift... not feeling the sharpest.

Good read.

I don't drink tap water due to the taste and smell. Our town has a heavy chlorine content, so heavy that when I fill my Britta tank it smells similar to the pool at the gym. After a local woman was found dead in one of the water containers and had been floating there for a few days, I decided not to cook with tap water any more either.

Work supplies us with a maching filled to the brim with Poland spring and ony charges up 25 cents per bottle, so $2 a day and I am good to go..

I would drink tap water if the flavor and smell appealed to me, but it doesn't so I drink filtered or bottled water instead.

I'm a heavy water drinker, between I drink atleast my weight in oz every day and have been for about 6 or 7 years now. My body is used to this and failure to drink at least half that in a day does odd things to my body.

Over here tap water is healthier than bottled water. Research has shown.

Thus i always laugh when i see people buy copious amounts of bottled water in the supermarket.

wtf, you might be an addict. I'd be supprised if you dont have some weird electrolyte imbalance from that amount of water - it tends to deplete sodium (AFAIK). You can overdose on water, and get trips from it

Sorry error in my calculation it's been many years since it figured how much water I need to drink, it's supposed to be about half your body weight
$2.00/0.25 = 8
8 x 17oz = 136oz it's a bit more than 1/2 my body weight ... :paranoid: and yes I am addicted. To counter balance that I drink about 3 cups of highly caffinated coffee or espresso a day so I calculate with the diuretic I come up even :)

In the last year or so I've started drinking more water. I probably drink about 6-7 glasses a day.

I can't drink my tap water without filtering it. The water here in the city is fine, but the water in my house has something in it that pretty much purges my system within 30 minutes of drinking it. I have no idea what, but after running it through a filter it's fine.

The only time I buy bottled water is when I'm at work, or I'm out somewhere without any, but that adds up to be quite a bit.

Oh man you should see some of the tap watter in some of the places I have been in Europe. It is the sweetest tasting thing you will ever taste.

I know people constantly keep showing of their brilliant IQ's by saying that watter has no smell or taste. But natural watter does, and that is a fact. And some of the watter I drank in Europe, tap watter feed directly from natural springs. It smells so fresh. And the taste is so sweet, in a good natural kind of way.

Yep, Season 1, Episode 7. That episode also dealt with Feng Shui.

i drink from these big bottles - 4 litres for 99 cents (canadian).

only reason i do it is coz our plumbing system here is REALLY old, and i dun yet trust the water coming out of them. Gonna get it tested though. If it's safe to drink, then absolutely I'll switch back to tap.
