Auto Advice?

Post by Bdw3 »

Because I value Q3W’s opinion. (somewhat. ;) )

So I have a 1990 Toyota 4Runner 3.0L V6 (SR5 4 Door)
Roughly 130,000 Miles on it.

This thing is nearing the end of its functional life with us. This is sad, because it’s been such an awesome vehicle. My brother learned to drive in it, I learned to drive in it, and I think even the eldest sister learned to drive in it.

Recently the Cylinder head gasket has cracked and is in need of replacing.
Trouble is the current condition of the vehicle doesn’t really warrant the price of the 7 or more hour job the replace the full kit.

It’s was in pretty rough shape before this due to my grandfather’s lack of care when it was his. It’s lived outside since ‘96, and stuff like half assed wash jobs after running it on salty roads in the winter and the like have taken their toll on it.

Both boots on the front CV Joints need replacing, which is a moderately costly job, due to the fact that the entire front end needs to be taken apart to replace them. =/

The body is rusted through with holes over both rear fenders, the entire rear bumper could use replacing. One rear door is starting to rust through in one spot and the front finders are starting to show some rust as well.

The sunroof needs all its guts replaced, it hasn’t functioned in ages, and embarrassingly enough is lined with blue duct tape to keep it from leaking.

If the Cylinder head gasket was a non issue the KBB value would be $2,600. But with the problem of course the value is N/A :(

Although I would love to tear it apart myself and better learn my way around engines, I haven’t the time or funds to peruse this option.

Sorry to be so long winded, but I wanted to be as detailed as I could be.

So I ask you guys what you would do?

Typical response form most of my local buddies:
TURN IT INTO A MONSTER TRUCK!
……No.

the car's value is so low that it isn't worth spending money on fixing it.

If it was just the head gasket I'd say fix it, but with all the rest of that, sounds like a losing battle.
