But I was having a chat with a housemate of mine about this. Its to do with downloading TV episodes (if this thread gets deleted I understand)

I've never owned a media center pc or a new sky digital box, but as far as I'm aware, with these you have the facility to download (or "store") programmes that are broadcasted on TV, correct?

If this is the case, then why is downloding TV episodes considered illiegal? Why is it legal for me to say, set my media center to record this weeks top gear show, but illiegal to download the episode?

I thought It had something to do with cutting out adverts on downloaded episodes and therefore advertising companies would loose profit, but im pretty sure you can do that with a media center/new sky digital box.

So, can someone enlighten me please?

Srsly tho, the legal issue normally surrounds distribution of the videos, not acquisition. Meaning uploading is targeted, not the downloaders.
