"Two men are critically ill in the intensive care unit of Northwick Park hospital, and another four are seriously ill after taking an anti-inflammatory drug as part of a drug trial."
Um, yes. Thousands of these clinical trials happen annually, and the safety checks before any of these drugs reaches any form of human consumption is extreme.
they interviewed the girlfriend of one of the potential pre-corpses on the radio (where the copy for the most recent story has come from).
was disturbing listening, made you feel sorry for the poor bloke.
there he is, expecting a headache and a touch of soupy flatulence as a quick fix to his debt problems, when all of his organs stop working and he swells up like the elephant man. that's got to suck.
The drugs are still tested for safety, as Foo already stated. So it isn't exactly like "buying a car from a gypsy and wondering why the wheels fell off".

You are certainly right that a good amound of testing is done before a drug is given to humans, seeing as this fiasco is exactly what a firm wants to avoid. But these firms are not doing a good public relations job at the moment and are sending mix messages to the families of the victims.
Did the drug kill a dog or not?
They should explain clearly and immediately the testing that was done that gave researchers good confidence this drug would be OK for humans.
Drug trial goes pear-shaped, 6 men throw terminal whitey = Drug trail goes horribly wrong, 6 men are at deaths door.
