Firefox slowness

Post by SplishSplash »

We all know about Firefox's memory usage.

I have a rather old PC, and Firefox rapes it constantly. Now i have found a rather simple solution which made things much better:

I reduced the memory cache to 16 MB AND turned off the disk cache. Yes, I know. You probably think:

HE'S K-K-K-RAZY! Now he has to load every page from the web!

Yes I do. And you know what? I'm on a 2 MBit line. I couldn't care less.

And FINALLY my computer doesn't freeze up every other minute anymore because Firefox decides it has to search my entire HD for some stupid website. The silence! Oh, the silence. It is wonderful.

Try it out. If you have a relatively new computer, you probably couldn't care less. But if your computer freezes because your HD is getting fucked by a Fox, it just might help.

Edit:
Other modifications I have made:

- Set Browser.cache.check_doc_frequency to 1 to further reduce cache access
- Activate the key that clears Firefox's mem usage everytime you minimize it.

Edit #2:

I re-set the memory cache to 32 MB, but I'm still convinced that turning off the disk cache was the best idea I've ever had. (as far as web browsing goes)

Edit #3:

gosh I can't believe how quiet this is. And not slower in any way. Quite the contrary.
