Noone plays it cause of FPS !
Lo Guys,
I can tell you why noone of my friends plays Quake 4.
People got AMD's about 3 GHz, 256 MB grafic cards (GF6800) and about a Gig of RAM.
If you play with kind of hardware, Quake 4 feels like its broken or full of bugs.
Yo Raven guys, if you cant make a Patch that gives players with that kind of hardware the magic 60 fps, then Q4 will die in 2-4 Month.
I own AMD3800+ x2, GF7800GTX and 2GB RAM. Thats what i would call minumum requirement for Q4.
Cu, Ichi

I've got an P4 2.66 ghz 512mb ram and a GF 6800 and I get 60 fps on high detail 1024x768, without using ambientlight or other tricks, and even those who have smaller pcs can then use ambientlight to get an extra boost, and btw, when Quake3 came out, ppl had same problems there too.. it needs time to get the hardware for q3like 300fps

I have an A64 3200, Radeon 9500 Pro and 512mb of ram, and the game pretty much runs 40-62fps on high.
I don't know what your problem is, perhaps you're trying to run it at ultra high mode (STUPID)

me too...i can turn all the shit up with only a few exceptions and my shit stays locked at 63...rarely dropping below...xchaser wrote:I have a amd 3200+ with 2.5gb of ram and a 6800gt with 256mb of ram and I get a steady 65fps with no lag... unless I join a high ping server.

It isn't update with the last beta patch released a little while ago though.

ichicanix, tweaking can help, albeit not as much as in previous Quake games.

O.K. is there something I'm missing?
I'm running a P4 2.4 533fsb
768 ram (stupidfuchingrambus $$$$ hell, not going to upgrade)
AGP 6600gt 81.94 drivers
Should I be getting better FPS than this? My FPS drops to 11 on a full VQ3 server with low ping.
I've disabled a lot of my processes and used driver cleaner to no avail. I've also tweeked the hell out of my cfg via upsetchaps.
I've also hooked up my old crt and run at 640x480 and only got a 6-8 fps difference vs 1280x1064 using the ggl timedemo :0 This would seem to indicate a cpu bottleneck?
A friend of mine has an AMD X2 3800, 7800gt and he still has frame drops at times.
That guy still knows his shit, so no "NEWB" comments....
Is there something I'm totally missing? Q4Max is great with vertex lighting as my fps only drop to the high 40's with that, but really, not many people are playing DM with that mod.
I've been thinking about building a new comp, but I can't really justify it if Q4 dosen't take off.

Not sure what it is? But yeah, you're missing something. My old computer, the one my wife plays on... has a P4 3Ghz Northwood, Granite Bay chipset, 1 GB RAM, and a 6800GT.. It locks on 60 FPS at 1024x768, 2x AA, med quality.. in single player, it can stutter down to 30s, but in DM, the FPS is pretty much solid at or near 60. Vanilla Q4.
Could be your FSB just does NOT have room.. I betcha it's okay on a low-population server, though, yes? :icon26:

Haha
before I installed my soundcard drivers on a fresh win x64 install, q4 was running at a pleasantly consistent 63fps
it's the sound shit that's slowing it down honestly

I have the same problem. I have 1G corsair, p4 2.8, x850xt 256 and like ichi says"Quake 4 feels like its broken or full of bugs".
I havent tried the ambient tweak yet as I just found out about it, but Im not happy at all with the performance I get on my rig considering the game is set right now to look like complete shit.
I havent enjoyed Q4 mp at all because of this. I had high hopes but so far am very disappointed. So im waiting for a patch or Ill just continue to play CoD2, which plays great on a packed server of 20 or 30 peeps, on high detail and smoke bombs going off everywhere...and no uber-geek cfg tweaking necessary.
btw, the fact we're supposed to make all of these cfg tweaks to get a game to run proper is a flaw in and of itself afaic.
btw2 - hi everyone

you're not alone in this synopsis.CheapAlert wrote:Haha

'others' (yes its those 'others') have suggetsed nobbling s_maxChannelsMixed "??" to something smaller, and have said that this improves FPS (iirc q4 defaults to 63) obviously if its lowered too far, then theres a good chance you'll drop sounds (48 seems to be a a happy medium) - could someone try having a play and confirming/denying this ? (63 fps all the way here no matter what i chuck at it, so i cannot tell if this makes a difference or not)
also suggested is s_maxsoundspershader (defaults to 0)
I can remember when Quake 3 first came out. I had a TNT2 and sometimes I got a 13fps. Man those were the days.
The GFX Card companies came out with some better cards and after purchasing one of these and buying a better computer all together, my fps increased.
The same thing will happen here as well. ID and Raven have raised the bar a little higher.
It's the cycle of life.
