What do you want from a deathmatch game?
Seeing as Doom 3 and Quake 4 MP didn't pan out to be what we thought they would be what is it exactlly you DMers want from an online DM game?
Tell me everything.
Tell me everything.
For me I like team based, tactical deathmatch games. It's why I like playing CS : Source and Day of Defeat source but its rare when people in these games work as a team, unless you know them all. However if you play on a server with a bunch of your mates it can get quite good.
A good community doesn't go a miss aswell. I used to love playing Tribes 2 because of the gameplay and the community that came with it.

Depends on my mood to be honest. If im pissed off i'll go for quake style action to get the adrenaline going. Normally i'll play games like Counter Strike, DOD, Battlefield 2 etc. Mainly because i prefer the slower pace and building up to a battle or tactically planning what I/My squad should do next.

Well, art has hardly anything to do with it. Look at Action Q2, it was ugly as fuck made by a few kids who got bored. Yet it rocked so hard. Then look at Quake 4. Sure Quake 4's design is a bit off bu the graphics are top notch. Yet i cant stand to play Quake 4.
Its got more to do with the fun factor than the visual factor. Quake 4 is just so dull to play...?
The same can be said about CS and CS:S. CS before 1.5 was amazing to play, it was just "right" then they changed everything, it went downhil, and they changed more. Then we ended up with CS:Source which isn't anything like the "fun" original, but just sucks ass. Its obvious its leaps and bounds ahead in terms of visuals, but its just not fun to play.
Graphics only play a part when your forced to change them because the game wont run on your system. Although I can play anything out max detail and smooth, i just cant bring myself to play Quake 4 online... Its just... Dull...?

Well in terms of that, its pretty obvious. I dont want to go into a game setting where there are 90 foot tall robots, killer cyborgs etc and shoot them with a weapon thats been here for 10 years anyway.Mr.Magnetichead wrote:I'm not talking about bump maps and pushed polys odium, i'm talking about theme...art direction...style.
Quake 4 bombed because it wasn't right. They had all thes econcept drawings, all that back catalog stuff they could pick from Quake 2, and they just went with the most boring over doen style ever... Standard future setting polish. Show a kid a pic of Quake 4 and he could think it was Halo 2. It had nothing to just say "hey, this game stands out". Even the guns were rips of OTHER guns. Sure, its called a hyper blaster, but we all know its NOT a hyper blaster.
See back when Quake 2 was around we didn't have a lot. We had Quake 2, which LOOKED like Quake 2 (Muddy brown textures). We had Unreal, which LOOKED like Unreal. (Amazing big outdoor bits with colours everwhere). We even had our console FPS games like Goldeneye, which again LOOKED like Goldeneye. Now however, every game that comes out seems to be a direct rip of another with a few things changes. Quake 4 LOOKS like Halo 2 etc.
The problem is ideas are a hard thing to come by, but getting people to follow new ideas is even more of a bitch. Its all well and good saying you want a new game with new features thats never been done, but will people REALLY follow?
Heres an idea. Look at your game shelf. What type of games do you play? SOF2? Quake? FarCry? Thief 3? HL2? Well, would you INSTANTLY buy a game where your lead player is somebody who DOESNT kill everybody? Would you INSTANTLY buy a game where when you hit somebody, blood doesn't come out? Would you INSTANTLY buy a game where the gun isn't on the screen and isn't anywhere, because you have to go around stealing things off them instead?
Or would you INSTANTLY buy a game where your lead charecter is a hard ass marine who can hold an army worth of weapons on his back and can shoot the living shit out of anything?
Sure you may not buy it instantly, but it will register in your brain as a posibility, over "Super Furry Ferrit Jumpers".
Same with Deathmatching really. What is Deathmatch? Its about a group of people out for themself who have to kill as many people as possible while controlling certain areas of the map, in an atempt to have the most frags to win. You cant really change that to much before its not longer "deathmatch". Quake 4 did Deathmatch, it did it perfectly, but it was the game behind it that was just so dull and boring. Sure it had the Quake 3 style powerups, the Quake 3 sounds etc, but people moaned it wasn't "Quake 3".
The main problem is that people refuse to let go. People refust to change, to try something new. So now, we are forced to play Quake 19, Unreal 47 and Half Life 73, becaue they KNOW we really want it.
Me, I've been stuck at my DS constantly for the past few months. Games like Mario And Luigi 2, Another Code and Resident Evil DS have kept me going. I've done platformers, RPG's, Point and Click and survival horror games before, but hey, now i get to use this new touch screen stuff. ITS VERY COOL.
