Updating doesn't work properly (can't establish connection) and sometimes it makes all the icons in my tray go away.

I've been using AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition for a while now, no problems whatsoever, it's worth a try...

AVG is extremely reliable concerning updates. It also doesn't slow down your system at all (doesn't seem to noticeably slow down my parent's P2 400). I believe it doesn't stop much spyware/adware, but for that there is Firefox.
