Weight lifting question.

Post by Iccy »

Can you lift too much ?

I find myself gettign addicted to lifting i think. When im stressed out, which is everyday lately, i feel like i wanna lift, so i come home and bust out a few reps, most chest and arms, but its like everyday i wanna do it.

How bad or good is this?

You should rest at least 72 hours between training the same muscle groups.

Unless your on something then yeah not taking a break on a specific muscle set will just burn it out. 3 days is normally enough, as your still recovering/repairing muscle on the second day. So just do different exercises, you dont have to, and shouldnt, do arms every day...

You also need to be aware of overtraining smaller muscle groups like biceps by training them on a different day than back. For example, you'd never want to train back one day, arms the next, chest the next.

For strength training purposes, I think its good to keep biceps with back and triceps with chest (simple push vs. pull muscle groups).

Agree with tnf.

Something like this is what I have normally done.

Monday - Chest/Tri
Tuesday - Heavy Legs
Wednesday - Back/Biceps
Thursday - Light Legs/Cardio
Friday - Abs/Shoulders/Light Arms mostly to stretch out the muscles a bit.
Saturday - Swim.

Yea, that's not a bad split. If I was trying to add mass and not worry about remaining lean, I'd cut the extra days of light lifting and basically train and eat and rest.

Yeah I try and go for a more well rounded approach, lots of chinups, dips, squats, that kind of thing not to get huge, just fit.

That's a popular approach these days...lean and muscular.

It also takes less work then to try and get huge. I dont put on weight easy so its a natural fit for me.

Though I wouldnt mind getting massive for a year just so I could say I was built like a roid freak for awhile... :icon25:

If your at all like me training legs just takes to much out of you probably. I am sick and exhausted after a heavy leg day. Upper body while you may be tired is more relaxing then the pain of a good legs day. :icon32:

Guess its just me, when im sore from back or chest its fine, but I always go to burnout and my legs dont seem to like moving the day after, going up stairs, sitting down, etc...

The only time i get sore (DOMS style) is when I haven't worked out a muscle group for an extended period (weeks).

If you've just started lifting again, you'll bound to get sore. Enjoy it while it lasts, coz if you start lifting regularly, it doesn't return in my experience.

I just came back from gym - i've put on 8 pounds in the last 3 weeks (from 150 to 158) - hoping to get to 165 or so before i start cutting.
