I believe the difference is that when you smoke pot your altering your mind through the drug use, normal smokes only calm the craving that your body is generating because of the addiction so you feel normal again.

Then again I havent done any of either so I dont know really.

I started like that but then I had a gf who disagreed so smoking became taboo. After a while I started sneaking a smoke here and there and eventually it was no longer social. I'm not blaming her though, I enjoy it and would have eventually started anyways.

ive done all sorts of drugs, tabacco is by far the most addictive but isnt any different, except that it is a bit more socially accepted :p
