old habits die hard

Post by Underpants? »

One of the draws of q3w is the unexpected nature brought about by the rift of inter-continental conversation. Though it's nice to have something in common with folks, I'm rounding the 7 year mark on a monthly poker game tradition with about 8 long-time buddies. Now these are standup guys, walked onto the team with some of them in college and others I have known since high-school. Some of them are in acedemia now, and I imagine tnf knows a few of this type, single coaches that still want to act like high-schoolers watching porn and trading ephemeral insults over brittle subjects such as baldness, age and gaming adeptness. This is the only time we hang anymore, and during about the last 8 months, a subtle repeating pattern has emerged. The same guy gets drunk every time, the same guy becomes pissed (which is the mad pissed not the English-English drunk pissed) about the game each time, and the same guy acts like a fucktard each time with very little variation. Where there was comfort in the past, springs only boredom now. what do you guys do for entertainment with just your (one-time) peers and do you ever feel cast outside that group for more that just a short time?

To answer your question, my friends have been changing along with the environment. Junior High offered a set; High School offered a new set (different school); College offered an entirely new set (college far far away); post college offered an entirely new set (job and city).

It really nice to see the old friends occasionally and see what they are up to, but new people seem to always be around the horizon.

Ummm... I don't have any kind of set routine I do all the time. I do have a lot of friends whom I hang out with and do stuff with but I'm not always doing the same things with the same people. Using poker for example since I do play it.

I have about 3 groups of friends I play poker with. On some nights I might go out to a friends house where they're a bit older, a little more toned down but it's all good and it's a fun time. On other day's, I might go out where I know there's gonna be girls there, not so much anymore cause I have a girl now that plays poker so I'd just play with her now. Or sometimes a friend of mine organizes large poker games at a bar or smaller ones at his house and I might go there too if I'm feeling like I might be up to something else later that night... I dunno, I've been hanging with these groups of people now for years, 6 at least and I don't get bored, I just do stuff that won't seem boring. :)

Doing the same thing over and over again get's dull.

yes, I know a lot of those types that you mentioned. (the high school coaching types) Not so much where I am at, but I've got friends who are coaches and it seems like from day 1 they had planned to coach high school sports because they didn't want to ever let go of their glory days of high school sports...they can be as 'cliq'ish' as high school students, they will be as rude to the non-cool kids as the students sometimes, and its just a really sad situation. Almost as sad as the guy who wears his letterman's jacket to a high school game, 2 years after he graduated...(seen that one too.)

As far as the routine...I was in that drinking routine for a number of years. The same gang, the same bar, almost every other night. We had a table in the back they called the 'Friends table' (I guess in reference to the couch on the show that they always sat in). Pretty much any night you'd go there, two or more of us would be there....Our days were spent golfing, playing golden tee golf at the bar, going to the lake, and then at night we would drink ourselves stupid and it would start all over again. When we hit about 26-27 things began to change. I just quit drinking, completely after a near-death experience...and once I decided to teach high school I figured I should lay off anyhow. Now we all might see each other once a month if that...sometimes we all meet up with the wives and have dinner...but it will never be the way it was back in the day. Sometimes I miss those days, sometimes I don't.

I agree with plained about being glad to have hardcore partied back in the younger days...could never do it now...

yea...you'll fade back into that, my dad tells me nothing of his highschool years (providing further evidence that he was a HUGE STONER) and he went to collegdgegdgeg and he dropped out of ferris state in his 3.5th year (don't know why), (he is extremely successful now, owns a company that does group benefits, we're fucking rich). But he did that when I was really young, and now he's 40, and he didn't do it inbetween but he parties pretty hard with his current friends. (I play pool with him after everybody leaves, its great)
Why not?

Jenny: lol, i'm not changing the whole harddrive directory structure for a mod. Do it proper like other mods please.
