Nintendo "Floor Vision"

Post by +JuggerNaut+ »

article
At the amazingly beautiful Nintendo booth of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess at this years E3, one of the most astounishing things was sort of a touchscreen on the floor of the booth. The screen showed a little puddle with fish and a wooden bridge across. When you walked over the bridge, it dissapeared; when you stepped into the water, there were wrinkles and when you stepped onto a fish, they fled away.
check this video out! :icon28:

probably not new to fanbois like odium and eraser, but this is pretty sick.

That's pretty fucking cool. I've never seen that before. That could add some interesting twists on gaming.

While it's cool in its novelty, it's kind of pointless. I don't see it being useful for anything.

Though in the future I can image some places having the entire floor wired that way for some interesting effects in, say, the mall.

video games are kind of pointless and not really useful depending on how you think of it.

im sure if this thing goes commercial, there will be some really badass apps for it.

1v1 hopskotch anyone? :icon34:

Ok, yea, the more I think about it, the more things I can think of to do with it.

The point some people seem to be missing is that once again, Nintendo are doing things Sony and Microsoft haven't, for FREE, just for the public.

Know what happened when i saw it first? I smiled. Just like everything else Nintendo. It makes me happy and i enjoy playing with it.

Plus anybody who cant see how cool this is for adverts while out on the street is a retard.

I know damn well how much Japan would love to have these things. Imagine a coke advert when you got to kick the cans around or some shit. Its great.

Yeah that's kinda neat, seems to operate on shadows though and not neccessarily the people stepping on it.

I know that all the local movie theaters have things like this in their lobby, and it displays random adds and depending on what you do you can "break" the add or splash it away or put holes in it...it's rather neat
Why not?

to be fair, this technology wasn't made by Nintendo, but by a company a few years ago named reactrix.
So what sort of technology makes this possible? Is it a Revolution? From information I've gleaned, this technology has been around for several years now. In fact, I sent an email and confirmed it was created by a company called Reactrix. Reactrix describes its product as an "interactive media display solution that enables people to physically become part of and interact with visual content." Prior to E3, Nintendo contacted the company to provide the koi pond flair to enhance an already cool booth. To accomplish these displays, Reactrix uses a hardware and software platform incorporating a proprietary infrared technology, an LCD video projector, and a simple display surface such as a floor or wall. Reactrix charges about $2,500 for a 30-second spot.
above quote from n-sider.com

still very cool how they implemented it though, me like.

perhaps the mall soccer game can be called "free", but not a display at E3 since it's not open to the general public.

they don't get money for being at E3...they pay to be at E3, the expo lplace gets the money, not nintendo, so technically it's still free, provided you are there
