quake 2 + laptop

Post by _borsdy »

So I just bought a used IBM thinkpad on eBay.

Intel Pentium 3 - 1.13GHz
256MB SDRAM PC133
Integrated 16MB S3 SuperSavage/IX Graphics

I should be able to play the classic Dooms and Quake 2(that came with my q4) just fine right? I never used a laptop before and I'm just wondering if there could be any possible difference in performance...

Often laptops have issues based around their cooling technology - the chips 'slow down' to keep cool.

Aside from that stumbling block, you should get good Quake 3 performance from that too :D

I wouldn't count on good (in the sense of 125 fps at high detail) Q3 performance with that video chip. It will be very playable as long as you turn down the texture detail and perhaps geometry too.

Yes, Quake 2 and Doom should run just fine.

ugh, i've had a superior laptop savage card with 32mb and quake2 still ran like shit

For Doom you'll need to grab a modern engine, like zdoom. However, Zdoom occassionally FREEZES on savage cards :( Avoid Doomsday.

For Quake2 and Quake3Arena, you'll probably need an OpenGL Direct3D wrapper for good performance. GLDirect is one, but it slaps a nag on your screen after a few minutes. AltoGL is another, however they recently removed it off their site (for unknown reasons, it's been there since 1999), but I have mirrored it here

Yeah it's old, then again the savage card isn't so modernly dandy either.

yeah yeah, makes no sense why to bother having a 1ghz if the video card reduces it to a speed that was shunned ages ago.
