Cary Sherman (RIAA President) on Sony's rootkit:

Post by +JuggerNaut+ »

quoted from a transcript taken from a college press conference on the 18th, November.
“They have apologized for their mistake, ceased manufacture of CDs with that technology, and pulled CDs with that technology from store shelves. Seems very responsible to me. How many times that software applications created the same problem? Lots. I wonder whether they've taken as aggressive steps as SonyBMG has when those vulnerabilities were discovered, or did they just post a patch on the Internet?”

dunno if you saw this juggie... but this is an insane twist of irony if it ends up being true:
By painstakingly translating the finished program back into its original code, Porst and others claim to have found pieces of program taken from free community software projects for playing audio on computers. Such software can be usually be utilised only on the condition that its creators are credited. A spokeswoman for First 4 Internet told New Scientist that the company had no comment to make on the accusations.
I go somewhere else

yeah, that broke last week or the week before. it was touched on in one of the other threads. good info for those who haven't seen it yet though, and an outrage to the gpl community

some code samples here

They've already "apologized" for the rootkit being installed and are backtracking on that.

Something tells me they aren't going to be that repentant (using the word lightly mind you), when it comes to using the open-source software. They will find a way to try to justify it to the public, and the irony of what they've done won't affect their self-righteous attitude on people stealing their intellectual property.

Some tool in one of my classes had done that. He was always logged into the damn thing from class. Jesus christ was he a loser...Imagine Kyle's cousin from South Park and you get the idea.

So if I've learned anything from Snickers: reflash your router, end up like Kyle's cousin.

, the attorney general for Texas, today filed a lawsuit against Sony BMG Music Entertainment, alleging that its controversial (and now recalled) anti-piracy software violates the state's anti-spyware and consumer protection laws.

Its still very much the case. Users don't give a shit about tweaking and fiddling with their OS so it will work or recompiling their kernel.

Its not just navigating its installing apps, learning to use new apps, learning a new desktop environment, learning a new file management system, installing drivers, troubleshooting their PC, keeping updated, the list goes on and on and normal users just don't care. Hell, working with tech is what I do for a living and even I can't be bothered with the pain in the ass of running a *nix OS.
