Freelance writing

Anyone here ever had anything published? I'm talking to those of you who are professionals in some field - programming, whatever - to see if any of you have ever written anything for some random publication in your field (or even out of it).

Looking to try and peddle some of my writing to some smaller publications initially. Going to need to figure out the basics of this process, as all the writing I've done in the past has been on a contracted basis where I had a very specific job (i.e. material for textbook support).

If you have done anything like this, or know anything about it, let me know.

Only one page in the Uni newspaper once.
It was about the war VS the famine in the world. I was 26YO in 1984 and to my pleasure I had real goods critics, only positives one about it.

I do like three pages in a little magazine about market research every two months...

Since it's a freelance thing, i get paid a certain amount for every word that gets printed.

most (or a lot anyway) of publications will take submissions, so you may just want to go ahead and send your stuff out. (or contact the mags to see if they take submissions)

your other option is to get an agent. you've written textbooks and stuff in the past so you shouldn't have a problem getting representation. if you go that way, you can let them worry about finding someone to publish your work.

I worked as a journalist for 2 years so I was published in that genre. In my grad school career I've published 4 articles and 2 speeches (both gay). I'm actually looking to publish some short fiction, maybe once the dissertation is finished. I bought a bunch of 'HOW TO GET YOUR FICTION SHIT PUBLISHED' books about a year ago but haven't had time to read them.

Well, the first requirement is you have to write good, and the second requirement is you have to know people... If you know people, the fact that you write good and not well will not matter.
