If I move to a dual Xeon machine, which Linux OS should I go for? Running several dedicated q3 servers is my main focus for the server. The hosting provider is recommending Centos because Fedora Core doesn't take advantage of the Xeon's 64-bit capabilities. (So far I've been running FC4 on a Celeron box).
Even if q3ded doesn't run 64 bit, will it run just as well (or better?) under Centos? Or should I stick with FC4? Also, does .q3ded take advantage of dual procs? Or will one just be sittin' there doing nothing and a single proc p4 would be just as good for less money?
Thanks in advance for input.

Quake 3 can use SMTP ( I.e. More then one CPU ) allthough to tell you the truth, i wouldent enable it, you willget nothing but headaces from it ( I.e. Instablitiy )
As for the performance part, i would say it would run the same between the two, assuming you have the things nicly compiled.
anyway, i hope this helps.

hahahah, torm.. thanks.. i wouldent have caught that error.
hahah, ohh man, i knew all of the e-mail work for the past month would catch up to me.. anyway, the command that you are lookign for is r_Smp Make sure you enable it Via the command line, i'm told that is the way of getting the thing to be the MOST stable.

You might want to try Debian for IA-64, which many think is the most stable 64-bit distro out there.
The icculus.org Q3A source has been ported to x86_64. You can get it from their SVN and it will compile out-of-the-box. But be warned, you won't be able to use PunkBuster with it.
Multiple CPUs might or might not be beneficial. I can run three servers on a single AMD 2600+ without even so much as a hitch, so it all depends on the number of servers you're going to be running.

Well, the new server FINALLY arrived. And looks like I get the RH Linux as a free upgrade instead of Centos. So far, looking like it's running much better than the old Celeron, but time will tell.
Quick question, since the cvar to turn on multi-proc is r_smp, am I correct in assuming that this is a render cvar and that it will have no effect on dedicated server/q3ded?
