I've done full installs of XP from an Upgrade version. Just boot from the upgrade disk and right before choosing what HDD to use and format it says that it needs proof of a previous copy of Windows. I put in anything from Win98 to XP, I think any copy, even upgrade copies of any Windows 98 opr newer, maybe 95, and then it says ok and asks for the XP upgrade CD back and it does a full install from it

some OS's need or needed proof that you had a previous microsoft product installed.
i unfortunetly i needed to install win98 just to install win2000 and same as i recall with XP.
the upgrade versions just ask you to pop the older version disc in during install to confirm you qualify - never heard of being required to install the older os first
