it looks pretty, but knowing Sony, it's probably all CG

Hmm...I don't know. It does look better than the video from E3, but it still has too much of that GT4 look :icon8: We've learned from TGS that PD have diverted their resources to work on a motorcycle sim called Tourist Trophy, so that probably explains it. If PD really want to work on another game besides GT, I'd rather have them work on a full-blown F1 sim, especially considering the fact that Sony already has the exclusive F1 license.

WTH is that supposed to mean? :icon6: Haven't you seen the MGS4 trailer? It's at least as impressive, if not more, as the PS3 Killzone demo from E3, and it was recorded from real-time rendering on a beta PS3 dev kit. Hideo Kojima even did a real-time demontration right on the show floor (1UP had a clip of the demontration, which I've seen, but sadly Konami has asked them to take it down already). In fact, he put the PS3 Killzone video at the end of the MGS4 trailer as a joke.

Gamespot also wrote up an article on the real-time demonstration: http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/09/18 ... 33820.html

Some quotes from that article:

"This trailer isn't a CG or something that we've rendered on a high-spec PC," said Kojima "This is the real thing on a PlayStation 3 development kit."

Kojima's development team has been concentrating on MGS4's shadow and lighting effects. "We can change the shadows in MGS4 in real time. We can also place shadows on Snake himself, using [the PS3's] self-shadow effects. This is the first time that we've been able to do it in the series. We always wanted to use self-shadowing effects, and it's finally become a reality," said Kojima. "We're using high-dynamic range rendering this time and creating extremely natural visuals as a result," added Kojima's assistant.

Interestingly, Kojima said he doesn't want to give MGS4 a totally realistic look. "With the shift to high definition [resolution], we can give a very realistic look to the game, like an actual movie," he said. "But we purposely added filtering to give it the look that makes it Metal Gear Solid." He then showed how he can change the color balance, glare, and add other effects in real-time through the PS3 dev kit debug menu.

After Kojima finished off his technical demonstration, Kojima explained why he decided to age his characters. "Old characters are better because their wrinkles can be used to show the rendering capabilities of the PS3," he said. "Young characters have silky skin, so it's not as challenging."
A debug screen from the real-time demonstration:

KIKIZO also has this to say:

MGS4's HD detail is beyond breathtaking, and notably, everything we've seen in this and other PS3 videos (admittedly they're only really technical demonstrations on unverifiable hardware) runs at an infallible sixty frames per second - a goal which many big first-generation Xbox 360 games is currently struggling to achieve.
KIKIZO say they will have the HD, 60fps version of the MGS4 trailer on their site shortly. Can't wait to see that :D

That's a moot point now, because it's now been shown that PS3 Killzone type graphics is possible on the PS3 and in real-time.

Eeeer there isn't even a working version of the PS3 yet so that's not true.

Yeah and that DX10 demo (or whatever you wanna call it) from Crytek is all pre-rendered stuff, too; there's no way that's real-time (despite what Crytek may claim otherwise). You people are so gullible :olo: Anyway, it didn't really impress me, so why do I care? :)

Oh btw, word has it that:

1) Developers are finding some sorta bottleneck in the X360 (kinda consistent with the KIKIZO statement I quoted above).

2) The PS3 may actually be easier to develop for than the X360 this time around

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or if you really thing the crytek vid was prerendered?

he was sarcastic. his point was that theres no real hardware capable of running DX10 so smoothly now either, just like whatshisface claims theres no working ps3 on the planet; therefore a rather silly claim
