See how that could be misconstrued. I mean to say questioning these handouts isn't racist, the handouts themselves are a source of egregious inefficiency and mutual harm.

i suggest reading up on the indian act. it more or less removes individual rights in favour of collective rule. it overrides the canadian charter of rights.

so many young natives wanting to move forward but are being stifled by band councils who want to live in tee-pees forever.

ps. ax likes the wang!

If anyone is interested the debate is on CBC.ca live right now:

Clicky

It's a roundtable and a real debate...not that lock-step processed crap you see on yank tv. I don't know how much longer it'll be on but they're all pounding on Harper. Hilarious...they're all telling him we don't want to be like America and making fun of his friend Bush. :olo:

It's the french debate but it's got an audio english translation.

The NDP serves only on purpose, to ensure the Conservatives win by fracturing the left voter base.

Anyone catch the French language debate last night? I caught a bit but my attention was divided (I was at a poker game). May seemed quite good.

They gangbanged Harper.

Not sure whether to watch the Canadian or American debate tonight.

I'm watching the Canadian debate tonite. The US debate will be talked about over the weekend and there'll no doubt be a ton of clips to watch.

Besides...I have no interest in what Palin has to say. She and her type are physically painful to listen to.

Yeah...it's a lively debate.

The debate yesterday was just as blunt. It's a good format that has a good flow. The moderator is also doing a decent job of keeping things under relative control and asking blunt, off-the-cuff questions.

From everything I've heard, all of the candidates seem to have a decent idea of what's going on (including Harper) but alot of their answers when asked direct questions are full of air...the usual political wrangling.

However...from everything I've heard him say last night and tonight, Harper is indeed approaching his view of Canada that is completely different than the other candidates. The guy simply sounds like he should replace Palin and debate Joe Biden right now instead of other Canadians.

If anyone besides Harper and the Bloc candidate wins the election I'll feel better.

this is a pretty broad/vague question. what area of the environment are you most interested in? air, water, soil, deforestation, clear cuts...it's a pretty big list. solutions to each are going to be extremely different from one to the other.

where should the country start?

I think the best place to start is to not elect someone who wants to turn your blue sky black in pursuit of profit.

Did anyone else vote early on Oct 4th or 6th? I figured it would be better to beat the lineups, so I voted last Saturday.

no doubt. harper will not be getting my vote.

i just wanted to see what puff had to say. if he was genuinely interested in the environment or just the current media craze. i'm not convinced that global warming(man made)really exists or we are just continuing to experience the warming trend and glacial retreats that started 10,000 years ago.

antartica is growing. whats up with that?

Considering I worked for Greenpeace in 1989/1990 and have followed environmental issues, before and since that time, I think it may be fair to say I have a genuine interest in the environment (as any sane human should).

Another reason to not vote Conservative next Tuesday:

Canadian researchers call for end to 'politicization' of science
A group of Canadian scientists signed another open letter on Thursday, calling on political parties to end to what they see as the "politicization" and "mistreatment" of science.

The letter, signed by 85 scientists in the health, environment and technology fields, focuses particularly on a number of incidents involving the federal Conservative party, including the closure of the office of the National Science Adviser, the firing of the head of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and what it calls "political appointments" to the board of Assisted Human Reproduction Canada.

"While science is not the only factor to be considered in political decision-making, ignoring and subverting science and scientific processes is unacceptable," the scientists write.

"In light of these concerns, we are calling on all political leaders to articulate how they will work to improve Canada's track record with respect to the treatment of science and related due processes."

It's the second open letter from scientists published in the last week that has been critical of the actions of the federal Conservative party.

On Tuesday, 120 of Canada's top climate scientists signed an open letter criticizing the government and urging Canadians to vote "strategically" for the environment in next week's federal election....

..."I strongly oppose the distortion of scientific evidence as has been the policy of the current federal government, and we can no longer stand idle while ideology trumps scientific proof," said St. Michael's Hospital research scientist Dr. Stephen Hwang in a statement.

You're biting at the media's catchphrases. Most credible scientists refer to the phenomena as climate change, not warming. "Global warming" is what lets critics immediately dismiss discussion with arguments about how cold it was at their house last week.

nah. i just wanted to see if puff was biting at catch phrases. i'm pretty familiar with the terminology being bantered about. global warming/climate change are quite the topics in my hydrology and geomorphology(soils)classes.

climate change and global warming each have their own definition.

edit: i should expand on that. "global warming" refers to man made pollution causing the earths temperature to rise. "climate change" refers to natural processes that warm the earth. i think, quietly, most scientists are still not convinced "global warming" is happening right now.

It's not just the environment that the Conservatives can fuck up if they get a majority:

Conservatives pledge to reintroduce copyright reform
The Conservatives' previous copyright-reform legislation, Bill C-61, which died on the order paper when the election was called, was released in June to a wave of criticism. While a number of organizations that represent copyright holders, such as the Canadian Recording Industry Association and the Entertainment Software Association of Canada, praised the plan, it was roundly criticized as unfair by consumer advocates, artists, privacy watchdogs, education groups and other businesses.

The legislation proposed hefty fines for people caught downloading copyrighted materials but also made it illegal for consumers to work around locks — known as digital rights management — placed on media.
Don't forget this when voting on Tuesday.

Not yet. I'm hoping Canadians aren't so dumb...but I'm not confident.

Way way wayyyyyyy too many rednecks in this country.

But yeah...if Harper gets a majority I'll be back in Europe within 3 months.

I haven't been around to keep track of everything going on, but how bad is the situation? Are they predicting the Conservatives to gain more seats or are they more likely to lose some? If things go to the shitter because of the Conservatives, I may go on a permanent vacation, I think I prefer Commies to Conservatives.

According to "the polls" the Conservatives slipped last week but have "gained ground" from this past week. I have no idea who they're asking but I'm confident they didn't ask anyone in Montreal.

I was speaking with my Texan co-worker today and told him "It's funny...I feel good about the US possibly going Obama and getting away from this shit but I feel bad about Canada because we seem to be about to jump into that very large pile of shit."

BTW...although he's a Texan and only moved here a year ago he's allowed to vote in the Canadian election on Tuesday due to residency laws. He also agrees that greed and religious fundamentalism got us where we are and won't vote for Harper. :)

All I'll say is this: Canada is a markedly different place from the country I left back in 2002 (just after 9/11). It's not as bad as the US but it's definitely more right wing than it used to be. Canadians have definitely adopted some of the paranoia of our southern neighbors. We need not continue down that road.

Perhaps it's my perspective from living in Europe but I feel that Canadians in Government didn't learn a damned thing since 9/11 and are ignorant to the fact that following the American example to the letter means an implosion can happen to them in 5 - 10 years.

I feel the same about Canada going down the wrong road since 9/11, but I wasn't quite sure if that was attributed to the Canadian perception in general or just my own growing cynicism.
