yes it does, though i was talking about the white balance setting on my camera. i'm just getting to grips with it since my last camera was a POS cheap point'n'click thing. but that's useful info all the sameDoombrain wrote:Here’s a clue. You need any white in your images to appear white on your screen/print. Open PS, your image, levels, select the white dropper, click on a white pixel (use the 'info' window, for help) to set the white point, now do the same for black. Or you could just set the neutral grey point.seremtan wrote:nice stuff :icon14:
is that one of those washing tablet bags? nice pic. i'm still getting to grips with white balance

Point 1 is my white point, is something like R:3 B:8 G:3 but in levels when I use the white dropper it sets that point as R:0 B:0 G:0 and adjusting the rest of the image
Point 2 was my black, R:250 B:252 G:252.
Make sense?
Oh, white colour temperature. You’re best off keeping it on auto unless you really want the best possible shot. If you do use the custom white balance mode, if your camera has it. Normally you would take a shot of a white surface like a bit of a4 paper, making sure it’s full framed, in your currant environment e.g. indoors or in poor light. Then set the custom balance to that pic, depending on how your camera sets it up. Remember though this setting is only good for the environment it was shot in.seremtan wrote:yes it does, though i was talking about the white balance setting on my camera. i'm just getting to grips with it since my last camera was a POS cheap point'n'click thing. but that's useful info all the sameDoombrain wrote:Here’s a clue. You should be fine with just using the Macro setting and getting really close to the picture (do't use zoom). Depending on how the autofocus is set, you may need to have it on center-focus so it doesn't try focusing on something in the background.Nightshade wrote:WTF happened to my post?
Anyway, here's what it said before it disappeared:

Here's a photography n00b question: With my Powershot A40, what settings do I need for close-up shots, either indoors or out?
If you just want some decent photos, the auto mode should be fine, but if you know what you're doing you can make ajustments (like setting the white balance that Doombrain mentioned). As some examples, here are a few close-ups I took with my Powershot A95 this weekend. They're all done with Macro on the auto setting. They're not great, but then again I'm not a pro. At least you can see what I'm talking about.

EDIT: Website's being a dick... I'll try getting the pictures to work...

Go for it. Any advice you might have for improving my shots would be appreciated, too. My shots were taken quickly, as I was in the middle of portaging and trying not to hold up the people who were with me. In the case of the iris photo, I wanted the bee included so I didn't have time to frame it up well. Also, I don't know anything about good photography.ToxicBug wrote:I might go do some macros, just to show you guys how its done

That's a good eye you've got. They're from the boundary waters, along the Isabella River, Bald Eagle Lake, and Gull Lake, just southeast of Ely, MN. I have some more pictures that I'm going to upload a bit later to see if anyone has advice on improving them.shadd_ wrote:i know those shots are close to me werldhed. doing some canoeing in quetico/boundary waters?

bliss.
Not yet, but I'm hoping to go in August with my girlfriend. Unfortunately, we've had trouble figuring out just what permits we need to obtain to go in without stopping at the Permit station. Also, it starts to get expensive to get the permits for both bwcaw and quetico. I think what we'll probably do is head up to to Crooked Lake on the border and just camp on the US side. Maybe we'll take a trip all the way into canada later in the year.shadd_ wrote:nice. you ever go in on the canadian side? i paddled from the cnd side all the way down into the states side once a long time ago. 12 days ofwerldhed wrote:That's a good eye you've got.
