That's what the cops call a "come along" hold, and yes, it's very effective.
And I believe it was Greg "The Hammer" Valentine that made the figure 4 leglock famous.

Nature boy and him were about the same time with it, I believe. Both in the 70s/early 80s.

Yup, and I liked "Iron Man" Ivan Putski better than both of them.

no no...the figure 4 leglock made famous by the nature boy rick flair.
By the way, there is a hold I used to use while dealing with drunks, but i can't remember the name of it. It would start with a simple armbar/arm lock- if they tried to pull forward with their bicep, I would let them, then slide my left hand over their arm, as their forearm came closer to their bicep I woudl have my left hand kind of wedged between the forearm and bicep, my right hand holding their wrist/hand. From this position, i could apply minimal pressure and create a lot of pain in the rotator cuff/elbow/wrist. If they really tried to fight it, or tried to throw a punch with the other hand, I could really rip on it and probably dislocate the elbow, tear the rotator. Alternatively, I could sweep their leg and drop them - again, because they were in a pretty compromised position. Any idea what the 'name' of that armlock is?
I can take a video of me throwing it on my wife and dropping her with it if need be. heh.
It's hard to tell from just writing, but it could be a kimura lock. It's not like a standing version of this, is it?

I think a "come along" hold is the general name used for any pain/injury complience technique.

Yea, looks similar to that but standing. Works very well, and is very easy to do.

Could be, but the one tnf's description reminded me of is always done standing, you right arm between opponent's left arm and ribs.

At this point in my life i dont "fight". You will only get me to swing if your hurting someone i love or threating my life, at which point i will try to kill you.
But i guess to answer, i studies martial arts for many years, i can hold my own.

Never been a fight but if were ever angry enough to have a disregard for the law I would fucking kill someone. Most of the time nothing bothers me but I have a temper that even I'm afraid of.
Now a self defense situation might be different. I've never been threatened seriously nor have I ever been hit. I think if I got caught off guard like that it would be all over.

I don't know. I've never fought before, and to be honest I'd rather keep it that way unless I had to (self defense). I can't understand morons who get into fights over stupid trivial shit. In my opinion, if somebody annoys you or pisses you off, they aren't worth your time. You should just move on.

I've only been in a few fights and try to avoid them. The ones I have been in, I only barely remember. Once the fighting starts everything kinda goes hazy, and all of them so far have ended up with the other guy on the ground. I can't really say that I'm a good fighter because I don't really know. I've done quite a bit of sparring and boxing just for recreation, and I'm super quick with good reflexes and strong jabs and hooks, but that doesn't always mean much in a real fight.
That's the main reason I've been interested in taking martial arts - to learn how to control myself and my temper, because I don't like how I pretty much black out and go crazy, at all. I seriously doubt it's healthy, and it could easily wind up with me getting hurt badly. I've researched some different styles, but I've never followed through and taken any classes.
But I try to avoid fights anyway. The only times I've ever been in any were when me or my friends were in trouble and I had to.

I've been tempted to learn martial arts because I would have the best teacher now. My gf's grandfather, George Annarino, has recieved all kinds of awards and is in the karate hall of fame. He is 60-something and still wins tournaments. I think he has trained something like 29 black belts.

Heh...never thought about google searching him...wonder what else comes up. Oh yeah I almost forgot he was on Ripley's
http://www.geocities.com/signemickey/ripleyex3.html
He used to do all that crazy shit at my elementary school-walking on glass, breaking cinder blocks on his chest while laying on a bed of nails, and the cucumber trick. Never saw the nail driving though.

I don't have a lot of mass really, but I have a couple of years of WingTsun, some Muay Thai, some Judo and some MMA grappling training which more than evens it out generally.
I get into fights pretty often thanks to my friends, which has given me actual experience, and so far I've inflicted more damage than I have received each time. Guess I'm an ok fighter.

heh...the cucumber/sword thing is a matter of physics...kind of similar to the reason you can lay a cinder block on someone's chest and smash it with a sledgehammer without hurting them (not the exact same principle though).
