When I'm running Firefox, chat, and WoW I'm using 87% of my memory and the hard drives sound like they are chiseling a pyramid inside my case. The more often I alt-tab the faster it is, but it takes anywhere from 30 seconds to several minutes and my hard drives go into overdrive. With 400mb going to apps I have running, thats ~600mb used/reserved by the system.

Whoa, several minutes? For me it's 5-10 seconds max. Dunno if maybe Wow is a particular memory hog, but I can't see any reason why Oblivion or Supreme Commander shouldn't use at least as much memory. You only have 1GB RAM though, right? Vista does need 2GB to really fly smoothly.

Funny thing is that XP does a better job if you only have 1GB, but if you have 2GB and compare Vista to XP, Vista will kick XP's ass.

I'm running ReadyBoost with a 2GB USB stick, maybe that is helping me. If you only have 1GB RAM you should be able to benefit even more from ReadyBoost than me too.

I'm using a 2x512. Been meaning to get 4x512 but I still can't find a decent price on 2-2-2-5 ddr so I'm just holding off until I can go ddr2. I also have a single core CPU. So unfortunately im 0/2 when it comes to Vista optimization.
