radar detectors are only useful if you spend top dollar on one. if you get cheap junk its just a pointless object blocking your visibility.

i have an Escort passport 8500 (which is debatable as being the best radar detector on earth) and its never let me down. worth every penny of the super-expensive sticker price.
investing alot of money in a good detector is far cheaper than paying for even one speeding ticket.
yeah, the detector may cost $400 up front, where a ticket may only be $100 up front, but if a ticket raises your insurance premium 10% over 5 years... that detector pays for itself the first time it helps you avoid a ticket.

I used a Passport 8500 for a month and it was fucking worthless. It would go off for no reason at all but if I actually drove past a cop it would be silent. One time I honked my horn and it thought it was laser.

Unfortunately my common sense failed me a few times and I have 6 points on my license. So now I absolutely cannot break any motor vehicle laws within the next 11 months or I lose my license for 6 months.

thats a defective unit or defective electrical system in your car.

mine (and the few other people I know that have one) is flawless and accurate for miles.
the only time mine doesn't pick up cops is if they don't have their radar on. (the accuracy is also reduced if you do something stupid like mount it behind the windshield wiper, radar doesn't penetrate metal)

Let me put it to you this way: There are MILES of wide open two lane roads around here where I'd feel comfortable going between 80 and 100mph almpst constantly that are 45mph zones. It's fucking stupid.

rules or not, going the speed limit is impossible when you have a sport bike.

In all honesty, I'm a better judge of where I can ride fast than some fucking bureaucrat. I think that speed limits in heavily populated residential areas are a very good thing, because there are plenty of dumbasses that speed through them and should be busted. I am not one of those people.

however speedlimits are pretty subjective when you're on something like the I-90; where you paid a toll to even get on the thing, and the next exit isn't for > 20miles.

Oh I agree, I think that speed limits on interstates are a fucking joke. The problem is, so are many American drivers.

You can drive at 15 in all states as far as I know. Should be 18 I think, and lower the legal drinking age instead.

Yea, that would probably the the better idea. Over here you can drive at 17 and drink at 18, though it would probably be better to have the drinking limit 17 and the driving limit 18, at least that way the majority will (legally anyway) have gotton used to alcohol and be less likely to lose control of a car if they were stupid enough to drink first.

Driver's education courses in the US are a joke, too.

Is that the stuff you do pre-test, like the highway code etc?

It's probably a bit overkill here to be honest.. when i did it (but its got harder now) you had to take a test on the highway code / rules of the road etc and get 30/35 to pass. Straight after you take a hazard perception test where you are shown videos of driving scenes, and you have to click where you see a danger or something you should be cautious over (like a junction in the road). You have to get around 60/70 points on that to pass. If you fail either of those tests you have to re-take them both. (Their both computerised)

Then you have the test where you are allowed 15 minor marks (such as putting an indicator on too late, using bad gear selections etc) and no seirous marks (doing several of the same minor marks, not using mirrors enough etc),

Whilst on the test you have like 40 minutes to drive around a town/city and do various things, such as parrallel parks, reversing around corners, emergency stops, turning in the road, parking in car parks, roundabouts and just general driving.

It really is quite bad. I heard the German test is even worse.


edit: but then, it does actually work because 99% of the bad drivers I see (who pull out in front of you without looking, or drive about 1m from your bumper) are pretty old, and who obviously took the old style tests.
