Thought provoking explanation that immigration cannot help
Thought provoking explanation that immigration cannot help
A thought provoking video by Roy Beck that explains why government immigration policies cannot help the poor around the planet. An American documentary but I suggest it would apply to anyone who thinks they are doing the right thing.

Mildly related, but attempting to feed and provide for the poor only breeds more poor people...seremtan wrote:is this a thing? i've never heard anyone say that immigration solves poverty...
Re: Thought provoking explanation that immigration cannot help
I am thinking that way because just today I received 3 telephone calls begging, well asking for money for the poor in the world. One wanted me to give to people in Syria!xer0s wrote: Mildly related, but attempting to feed and provide for the poor only breeds more poor people...
I don't mind donating but I draw the line at giving my credit card details out over the 'phone to an unknown. I have to admit the sound of an apparent busy call centre nearly got me but then I thought hang on, that's probably recorded sounds added to effect

Sorry, but there is so much stupidity in his line of reasoning that it isn't even funny anymore. If you give this man's opinion more than just a sliver of thought, you're wasting your time.
Thought provoking? Not even remotely. It's plain stupidity.

Wait, what? You say you don't mind donating, but simultaneously say you get ticked off by people asking for donations and then come with an argument that has nothing to do with donating but is a fear of getting conned. Make sense old man.Whiskey 7 wrote: I don't mind donating but I draw the line at giving my credit card details out over the 'phone to an unknown. Trolling?
Would any of you give me your credit card details over the telephone? I think not!
As bad as an online scam. Click this link and fill out your personal details including bank details and I will forward you that inheritance of your Uncle you forgot about...

I'm not saying you should get scammed over the phone, I'm just pointing out the two are unrelated. You not wanting to get scammed over the phone (a very sensible attitude) has nothing to do with whether or not you want to donate money to a good cause.

Haven't watched the vid as i have no sound on this computer, but yeah, this.seremtan wrote:is this a thing? i've never heard anyone say that immigration solves poverty...
Suppose you could make the point that with a greying demographic a country would be best off welcoming a young workforce consisting of immigrants to prevent future economic decline, but considering most immigrants are unschooled and technological advances already mean that currently people who do receive an education are most likely training for jobs that won't exist anymore by the time they're done with school / uni it remains a bit of a gamble.
I feel the main question is this: what the fuck are those colorful round things in jars doing in that screenshot? Is this man explaining economic theory surrounded by psychedelics? How fitting.

Re: Thought provoking explanation that immigration cannot help
His explanation is far less well thought out than yours. Basically his point is that there's 3 billion people earning less than 3 dollars a day on this planet, so the US taking in a million immigrants a day really makes no difference on the poverty on a global scale, so why bother at all.
Oh and the gumballs represent poorians. One million of 'em each.

Re: Thought provoking explanation that immigration cannot help
I think it's been largely proven at this point that the only solution to poverty is the empowerment of women. Nothing else seems to have any effect.

lol, he has a point...
Re: Thought provoking explanation that immigration cannot help
I saw the initial video earlier in the day and realized the futility of the poor in the world before the calls asking for donations. I thought my meager donations much like an migration policy had and will have no effect. I was dismayed but I will still donate to a worthy cause. Maybe it was the nature of the ask, I mean over the telephone.Eraser wrote:I'm not saying you should get scammed over the phone, I'm just pointing out the two are unrelated. Re: Thought provoking explanation that immigration cannot help
Just to add here: On one of those begging calls I said, "I don't give my credit card or bank details out over the 'phone so send me an email".
"You have my 'phone number so you do have my email address don't you?"
They answered yes.
I am still waiting for that email
How long does it take?
