books are filtered out through publishers which means shit ones usually don't get published, or if they do and they're shit then they soon end up in bargain bins and nobody reads them, the internet however is full of useless and incorrect chaff posted by people who pretend to know about things they dont. Using the internet as a primary source for information without books is foolish.

I totally agree with you, but what you're saying also applies to books. Everyone can get a book published. What matters is when you publish something scientifical that it's reviewed by expert people or that it's from a source that's reliable (which can be difficult to determine).

If there's an article published on nature.com I can be sure that it's thoroughly reviewed and will have reliable resources.

I'll leave the 'better person' bit to the side since that is an entirely separate issue from what I take is the essential point of your question. Sure, 'willpower', perseverance etc. mean a lot, but you are only hamstringing your chances by forgoing education/training after high school.

Beleive me if I didn't have to be at work I wouldn't be here. Only once in a blue moon will you ever see me here on a Friday or a Saturday, try to find the last post I made on one of those days.

For profeessions like medicine a post secondry school (or high school) education is necessary. But for other areas including computing its really all the same. A degree may open doors for you to your first job, but employers also appreciate practical skills. I would like to get into a Networking / Systems admin position later on in life, and those jobs dont even necessarily require a degree, even the high pay £40k+ ones.

But especially here in the UK, universities have changed a lot since for example, when my parents were taking O levels. There are aparrently too many people getting degrees with devalue it, but whether i agree with that is another question.

Personally I dont beleive a degree will guarantee you a sucsess, the only think that can is yourself, your ambition and your drive.
