Of course all of humanity should denounce their actions. But if these "lunatics" are going to listen and reason with anyone, it's going to be someone of their own religion. No one else has a chance of getting through to them...

I think they're not going to listen to anyone just because the religions they follow share the same name (I put it this way because the name is probably all their ideologies share).
If they're going to listen to anyone, it's the people close to them, same religion or not. It's the community around them that needs to talk to people who tend to drift off into extremism like this, Muslim or not.

did you know for instance that Charlie Hebdo were once sued under such hate speech laws? How much good is that likely to do?

Scenario: Worst thing I can imagine happening is someone messing with my offspring. If that happened, depending on the level of damage caused, my response would range from serious GBH, to murder. In the midst of my anger, the chances of any human being convincing me not to act would be close to nil. I think that's fair for any father.

Now imagine the mindset of a man, or a group of men, who round up 12 human beings, and execute them one by one, on the basis that they plotted a particular combination of lines on a piece of paper.

These extremists in Paris are lunatics, sure, I'll go along with you on that train of thought, but there's also hundreds of insecure young Muslims who are easily convinced into packing their stuff and going to Syria to supposedly fight for a good/holy/whatever cause. I'm sure that a good portion (majority, if not most of them) of these young men (still boys in some cases) aren't nutcases and can be convinced not to go, if the right people talk to them.
I also think that the real lunacy probably doesn't surface until they're completely disconnected from their home (and family) and 24/7 under the influence of bad men. So I don't think it's improbable that incidents like these can be prevented by giving these people sincere and positive guidance at a much earlier time.

Maybe it's not a strange thought to compare this to loverboys seducing and abusing young girls. These girls are insecure about themselves, have no goals and are easily brainwashed into believing things about themselves and the world around them because they honestly don't know any better. If a strong, seemingly trustworthy figure who appears to respect you tells you something is like this and that, you'd be inclined to take his word for it. These girls aren't crazy, but very naive and severely misguided.

Depends on how you define droves i guess; 700 Frenchies alone is not exactly nothing... though i wouldn't call it the most popular thing for angsty teenagers to do after school either. There's probably several thousand folks from Western countries fighting in Syria and Iraq at the moment, they estimated the total amount of foreign fighters at around 15.000 a couple of months ago. Saw a website with estimates of jihadists per country a while back that i would have liked to link, but a quick google didn't reveal it instantly... alas.

And the beheadings are official IS policy, not the work of lone maniacs - the (very) few reporters that have had access all reported that.

The chain of events that led to the massacre in Paris may well have been sparked off by a classroom discussion in the banlieus of Paris or Marseilles. Some pupils were no doubt certain that the Holocaust was a myth.
