With the current state of the consoles

Post by losCHUNK »

I think it's about time for SEGA to make a come back to the hardware market. Aye I know that their capital isn't great and the new generation of fan boys like to stick to their CoD fantasies on inferior technology, not to mention the loss of talent but with the Xbone and PS4 being practically twins and Nintendo playing russian roulette with a full gun it's about time someone shook things up a bit.

If SEGA could make a console that plants itself firmly on the principles of consoles back in the late 80s / early 90s don't you think the market would love it ?, a no nonsense console dedicated to gameplay and nothing else ?. They still got some great IPs which is why they spring to mind and as a publisher could have the attraction of studios to pull the games onto their platform. MS and Sony are just pushing what they think is good onto their audience and are caught in a battle going in the wrong direction. It's not even like they have great IPs, HALO, MGS, Last of us all spring to mind and they're just flogging dead horses now.

Maybe Nintendo and Sony could team up, idk, but the Dreamcast was an excellent piece of tech and I think if they reacted now they could find a nice little hole in the market to exploit.

Just like the Dreamcast, which was a great console with great games... which failed. So, no.

What does the Wii U do that isn't gameplay, then?

I thought it was a lack of marketing and pulling the plug too early tbh

A gimmick that's stuck somewhere between handheld and console gaming, alienates developers and hardware so shit it automatically negates any longevity of the device.

Instead of persevering with their IPs like they did with the wii it looks like they've already lost faith.

I was thinking a similar thing about Nintendo teaming with Sony.

Nintendo should quit the home console market and stick with handhelds.
Become 1st party developers on PlayStation.
Sony drops the Vita and become 1st party developers on Ninty's handheld.

Double the money printed for the smiley Japanese!!!

What if I told you the PlayStation was born as a result of Sony and Nintendo teaming up?

Also, lol:

After the collapse of the joint-Nintendo project, Sony briefly considered allying itself with Sega to produce a stand-alone console. The Sega CEO at the time, Tom Kalinske, took the proposal to Sega's Board of Directors in Tokyo, who promptly vetoed the idea. Kalinske, in a 2013 interview recalled them saying "that’s a stupid idea, Sony doesn't know how to make hardware. They don’t know how to make software either. Why would we want to do this?".

Heh, it seems Sony just took what they needed.

MS tried the same thing with SEGA (as a team) but ended up going with the Xbox because they didn't think SEGA had the backing to take on Sony. MS were working with SEGA on the DC, think it ran on a Windows OS ? and ended up influencing a lot of the original Xbox with rumours of a lot of SEGA employees moving on to MS in the aftermath of the Dreamcast.

New hardware wouldn't work. It can't conquer a large enough section of the market. Everyone's invested in XBO/PS4 now so good luck competing with those.

It could do an xbox and come out a year later with better hardware.

Not like its gonna happen but still

The problem is who owns the company at this point. A lot of parts and rights to certain games have been sold off to various companies.

Well SEGA still own the IPs, a shitload, along with studios like Creative Assembly, Relic, Sports Interactive etc.

I haven't bought a console since the Dreamcast, I'd buy another console from Sega.
