Arizona shooting: Girl, nine, kills gun instructor

Post by Don Carlos »

A nine year-old girl in the US has killed her shooting instructor by accident while being shown how to use a high-powered submachine gun.

The instructor was giving the girl a lesson at a shooting range in Arizona when the recoil from the automatic fire caused her to lose control of the Uzi.

Charles Vacca, 39, was shot in the head and died after being airlifted to a hospital in Las Vegas.

The girl was at the shooting range with her parents, who filmed the lesson.

That's exactly what you'd say to your kid before handing them a shot gun

aren't fully automatic guns illegal even in the US? Who sets up a 9 year old with something like that?

Nope, not illegal. Although, you can't just walk into a store and buy one. Gotta get fingerprinted and go through an extensive background check by the state bureau of investigation. Its a long process, takes a few months...

Hmm like I said in the other thread, why wasn't it strapped to some sort of tripod to prevent it from recoiling like that? Crazy.

Grown men have no trouble maintaining control of automatic weapons. Children should not be shooting them...

Care to illuminate us non gun nuts about how he screwed up exactly? I'm kinda curious. Did he stand on the wrong side or something? Or do you simply mean a 9 year old should never be firing a fully automatic submachine gun and the dude should have known better?

I'm guessing he should have realised a girl of that size would be unable to control the recoil of such a gun.

That would be my guess as well. Was wondering if there was more to it than that - Andy should know.

Kid shouldn't have been given an uzi, but the instructor should have been standing behind her. Poor kid's gonna be traumatized for life.

But even if stood behind, doesn't it still have the potential to go up and into her face instead ?

Yup, as I mentioned kid shouldn't have been given an uzi. I'm just saying that instructors are always supposed to stand behind the person shooting.

The freakin guy... he's loosely bracing her in semi auto mode, and then probably trying to show off for the parents so they can get a neat little video says "OK NOW FULL AUTO", switches the selector, kid pulls the trigger on a submachine gun with a high rate of fire and BBRRAAAPPPPP..... the recoil overtakes her which pulled up and to the left, giving him a bullet in the head.

It is 100% his fault and not the fault of any law (chunk). this is a candidate for the darwin awards.
