Taking money from crowd-funding and selling out to facebook for 2 billion. Great strategy!Tsakali wrote:this is why I'll never invest in a startup

They have all the data which defines your social experiences... your friends lists, the locations you visit, the media you enjoy consuming. They have 3D maps of the world. They know what you like, they've never particularly cared about what you don't like.. but they know what keeps you happy, content, amused... and now they have the best VR technology we currently have available....
OMG!!?!?!?!!!! THEY'RE BUILDING THE MATRIX!!!

I have a Facebook account, but I post fuck all and "like" nothing.
On the other hand, I'm holding off on upgrading my PC until I can get one of those shiny Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7 decks.

Re: Occulus VR acquisition....
Carmack wanted to make money on a niche market instead of the mainstream. It's cooler this way, but you get about 4 times less money (let's say 20% vs 80% according to the Pareto Principle).MKJ wrote: my god, it's like they're a business!

Well, there's a difference between a business that's just out to make money, and a business that wants to advance the technology and use it creatively...MKJ wrote:my god, it's like they're a business!

As long as there's a bonus Nigel mode.Memphis wrote:Which brings me to my first VR game pitch. You control one of three genetically enhanced cocks in a co-op, score based scenario, where players compete to beat the ever loving fuck out of various politicians by way of penile headbutting and ball-physics. Re: Occulus VR acquisition....
Call me naive, but I don't for a second believe that the people at Oculus ever considered ditching their technological ideas in favor of a big pile of money. Palmer Luckey has been busy with VR for years and Carmack has an immense love for the kind of stuff he's working on now. This acquisition doesn't suddenly turn them into money grabbing bastards. They'll still be doing the same thing as they did before, the difference being that now they've got 2 billion dollar in capital to fund their work.xer0s wrote:Well, there's a difference between a business that's just out to make money, and a business that wants to advance the technology and use it creatively...
Re: Occulus VR acquisition....
lol, the "Frog Fraction 2" kickstarter campaign has a new 2bn dollar stretch goal: buy Oculus back from Facebook.
Re: Occulus VR acquisition....
I like how people are pretending this was some sort of hostile takeover.
Re: Occulus VR acquisition....
We can assume they'll make a mainstream version of this according to Zuckerberg's vision. The only question is whether they're still going to make a Carmack version for the hardcore gamer market.Eraser wrote:They'll still be doing the same thing as they did before, the difference being that now they've got 2 billion dollar in capital to fund their work.

Why would there be a difference between the two?ToxicBug wrote:We can assume they'll make a mainstream version of this according to Zuckerberg's vision. The only question is whether they're still going to make a Carmack version for the hardcore gamer market.
Re: Occulus VR acquisition....
I'm just speculating here, but basically the same argument as what's the difference between a $100 and a $1,000 video card. They both have the same purpose, but a very different audience and price point. If nVidia only cared about the mainstream/low-end market, they would never make the $1,000 cards for enthusiasts.Eraser wrote:Why would there be a difference between the two?ToxicBug wrote:We can assume they'll make a mainstream version of this according to Zuckerberg's vision. Re: Occulus VR acquisition....
With the technologies and engineering difficulties involved, I don't think there's a bandwidth of consumer versions. The device either delivers a believable level of immersion or it doesn't. Reaching the level where it does is already such a challenge that proverbial stretch goals aren't in the picture. Any less and the device is worthless, hardcore gamer or not.
