Here's my guess:

They've established two things this episode. Firstly, they introduced the question wether dexter actually is a psychopath or not. Secondly, they established that only an act of "true altruism" can answer this question: Vogel said something like "One has to give up everything for someone."

The two possible answers will have two conflicting protagonists/teams behind them: Vogel and Deb. Inbetween Dexter.

In the final episode the question will be answered by dexter sacrificing himself for Deb.

Should've just left it off after his alleged death, the lumberjack scene was probably a first idea that some idiot threw up at an executive meeting to have a cliffhanger for the sake of having a cliffhanger!
