New Wolfenstein game?
New Wolfenstein game?
Apparently Zenimax registered some new Wolfenstein related domain name, and some composer's now deleted resume spilled the beans. It's supposedly in development at a Swedish Zenimax studio called Machine Games, who were previously reported to be working on something called Project Tungsten. Rumours say they are using id Tech 5, the same technology that powers Rage.
Somewhat related is that Squeenix registered warfornosgoth.com on the same day. Supposedly Crystal Dynamics are working on a reboot of the Legacy of Kain series. That news has gotten me excited as well.

That's a pretty impressive resume.
I'd love to see another game using id tech 5. It is a shame it has been sitting since Rage came out.

Memphis, you might enjoy Dirty Bomb by Splash Damage (makers of Wolf:ET). It's supposed to have very similar gameplay.

I hope they learned from Brink. Can't say I'm willing to put in $30 for beta access to this after that mess.obsidian wrote:Memphis, you might enjoy Dirty Bomb by Splash Damage (makers of Wolf:ET). It's supposed to have very similar gameplay.
Back to the topic on hand, did you guys play the Wolfenstein from a few years ago? The one after RTCW, developed by Raven I think? Not even on Steam, I thought it was...

Re: New Wolfenstein game?
I played a fair amount of Brink. It was a decent game that suffered from a few issues. The actual fast pace shooter aspect of the game was great. Most of the levels were fun, balanced and looked great. What it did poorly on was a badly advertised launch with some early game bugs, which hampered the number of initial players on servers. There was one campaign "Container City" that was notorious for a spawncamping stonewall that prevented one team from even leaving their base. The "SMARTS" parkour movement system was highly overrated as a gameplay mechanic and you're more likely to hop into a 3-foot-high concrete divider than being able to do a flip over it - it felt too artificial and limited that you could never get creative with your jumps.
Splash Damage has a huge following among players of Wolf:ET and ET:QW who still play on loaded servers (I still hop in from time to time). It's been indicated that SD is headed back to that direction so Dirty Bomb looks promising, as some of the alpha players have been suggesting. I'm not sure if the free-to-play model will benefit them and I'm not sure how they expect to pick up revenue after their initial alpha/beta access crowd-sourcing.
Raven's Wolfenstein is a single player game with some really great levels but suffered from the central "hub" area that was thrown together when their initial concept fell through for whatever reason. As a result, the game suffered from a huge disconnect between decently fun missions and a poorly hashed together way of stringing those missions together.
I think it failed on a development standpoint when the project lead who had no idea what he was doing scrapped the initial concept halfway though development (perhaps under pressure from Craptivision) and tried to build up a quick fix instead. It seemed that there was an "A" and "B" team working on that project where the "B" team totally dropped the ball, so you're constantly being bounced between fun and creative levels, and levels of gameplay travesty. A number of Q3W LEM'ers worked on Wolfenstein and I can see elements of their design style in some of the better levels.

Re: New Wolfenstein game?
The last Wolfenstein game turned me off so much I have no excitement about this game at all.
Re: New Wolfenstein game?
It was, then it got yanked without warning. I was going to wait until it went cheap then get it. Guess I waited too long.Psyche911 wrote: Not even on Steam, I thought it was...
Re: New Wolfenstein game?
Ok, let's recap that video.
The new Rise of the Triad will be great because:
- They've kept features that were original in 1994.
- There's a prison with actual prisoners!
- There's secrets! (read: walls that slide away like some goddamn Wolfenstein 3D fetishist's wet dream)
- Cool, super original traps like jumppads (you know, like in 1999's Quake 3), blades that can chop you into pieces and spikes that come out of the floor (you know, like in 1989's Prince of Persia).
- The fourth step of their level design process is "making things beautiful". Can't go wrong there.
- They say there's destructible environments, which sounds like Red Faction but you don't actually see any environmental damage in the video.
- They've got gibs!
- You can pick up coins, which is something no game has ever done before, 100% absolutely sure without a shade of doubt!
Just yanking your chain here, but still, I don't see a whole lot to get excited about in this video.

Re: New Wolfenstein game?
its touching some people's nostalgia bone.
and as always, it can only be disappointing lest they completely overhaul the gameplay while maintaining the spirit of the original (like PoP SOT)

Re: New Wolfenstein game?
It was awesome bro! I remember when the RTCW multiplayer demo was going to be released there were quite a few people huddled up together in a thread on Q3W. It took ages to download but I think we actually got a game going with some Q3W peeps right after the release.

it's not what it used to be, indeed.Eraser wrote:MKJ has a nostalgia boner
