Longreads
Longreads
Found this site last friday when work was tedious and dull and i had to entertain myself with the internets most of the day.
I share, from the goodness of my heart, because that's the kind of guy i am: http://longreads.com/

Re: Longreads
I've got an unshakable sense that I'm missing a whole load of context here...
Re: Longreads
The concept is relatively simple and does not take a first rate mind to grasp: t'is a collection of stories about various subjects plucked from various places on the web that have but one thing in common, the length of the article. Which is long, as opposed to short.
It's refreshed daily i think, and older stories are sorted in a handy archive for later viewing.

Re: Longreads
Long? All I'm seeing is bits of text that stretch two paragaphs at most....
Re: Longreads
Aha, i think i see the problem.
Let me explain: in computing, a hyperlink (or link) is a reference to data that the reader can directly follow, or that is followed automatically. A user following hyperlinks is said to navigate or browse the hypertext.
I think this will add to your internet experience my friend, good luck & have fun!

Re: Longreads
I did some closer inspection and while at first I could only discover these "Read later", "Share" and "More by this author" links, it turns out that the titles of the previews are hyperlinks that link to the full article.
This is such a counter-intuitive setup that an Internet veteran such as me could not work it out. Besides, the titles are marked with <h3> elements, which clearly define them as being headers. Nesting <a> elements inside <h3> elements is a web design sin that should only lead to the death penalty of the author of the webpage.
A simple "read more" link would have been sufficient.

Re: Longreads
What a stupid idea for a site. It's ignorance of Quality Not Quantity.
Re: Longreads
Negative statements by DTS regarding anything should be interpreted as high praise

Re: Longreads
How does "quality over quantity" apply to this website? Please explain, preferably using some form of actual logic.DTS wrote:It's ignorance of Quality Not Quantity.

Re: Longreads
Are you trolling, or are you actually that dumb? (It's hard to tell with you.)
Re: Longreads
Go ahead, explain.

it is about time!
Re: Longreads
this is actually not true, usability-wise. a lot of people are more prone to click headers and images than actual textlinks.Eraser wrote:Nesting <a> elements inside <h3> elements is a web design sin that should only lead to the death penalty of the author of the webpage.
in terms of accessability, the 'read more' link is one of the biblical sins since it doesn't have any context. in those terms the h3 would be more suitable for the anchor.
semantically an anchor inside a header is indeed illogical.
Re: Longreads
legend has it that long reads can also be found in an earlier, portable version of the internet called books
