The way I see it, if you steal the music you're stealing from the artists, and if you pay for the music, you're still helping to steal from the artists.
I download single songs more than anything, of which the good ones I'm willing to pay a buck or two for. But new albums around here are nearly 20 bucks, and I'm not paying that price unless I've heard and thoroughly enjoy the whole album. Fuck the RIAA as far as I'm concerned. Their approach toward this whole issue has only reinforced my image of them as greedy bastards who never had any regard for the artists to begin with.
I think a producing and distribution company run by the artists who have made it big and have the capital to invest in it would be the best solution to the whole problem, personally.

lots of reasons. not least of all the interaction such a company would need to have with the cabal that is the rest of the music industry and music retailers - it's possible that at some point a purely online distributor could spring up, but if that doesn't happen in the very near future then it never will - unless there's some drastic change in the way the world does business.

i'm not following you there...R00k wrote:The way I see it, if you steal the music you're stealing from the artists, and if you pay for the music, you're still helping to steal from the artists.
maybe you need to shop elsewhere. Best Buy, Virgin Records, Tower and even the Mom and Pops aren't $20 here. also, just like dvd's, get the album the first week of release. they're always <$15 here.R00k wrote: But new albums around here are nearly 20 bucks, and I'm not paying that price unless I've heard and thoroughly enjoy the whole album.
i agree with that. i hope nobody thinks i'm pro RIAA because i'm totally not. on the other hand, i'm not for illegal filesharing either. now, if cd's were released at $10 or less (again, hybrids/sacd not included), then i would certainly hope everybody would quit whining about the prices of music media.R00k wrote: Fuck the RIAA as far as I'm concerned. I don't know how many stories I've heard from musicians who have made top-selling albums, only to find out later that they never even got any of the money from the album sales.+JuggerNaut+ wrote:i'm not following you there...R00k wrote:The way I see it, if you steal the music you're stealing from the artists, and if you pay for the music, you're still helping to steal from the artists.
Granted, the artists should have been a lot more aggressive when they were negotiating their contract, but used car salesmen are still used car salesmen.
At Tower Records here, they're between 19 and 23 bucks normally, unless you catch some sort of promotion.+JuggerNaut+ wrote:maybe you need to shop elsewhere. I don't whine about it, but to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't even mind paying the high prices they try to charge here, as long as I got to check out the album thoroughly before I paid for it, and the overwhelming majority of the profit went to the artists themselves.+JuggerNaut+ wrote:i agree with that. i hope nobody thinks i'm pro RIAA because i'm totally not. on the other hand, i'm not for illegal filesharing either. now, if cd's were released at $10 or less (again, hybrids/sacd not included), then i would certainly hope everybody would quit whining about the prices of music media.R00k wrote: Fuck the RIAA as far as I'm concerned.
