The drop in suicides by gun was even steeper: 65 percent. Studies found a close correlation between the sharp declines and the gun buybacks. Robberies involving a firearm also dropped significantly. Meanwhile, home invasions did not increase, contrary to fears that firearm ownership is needed to deter such crimes. But here’s the most stunning statistic. In the decade before the Port Arthur massacre, there had been 11 mass shootings in the country. There hasn’t been a single one in Australia since.

i mean, everyone knows that smoking can cause lung cancer, but suppose a smoker says "i'm aware of this risk, but i enjoy smoking too much to give it up; if i get cancer then that's a price i'm willing to pay to continue doing what i enjoy". quoting evidence at such a person would be just talking past them. and before you say "oh, but they're harming themselves, not others (passive smoking aside)", what about the effect our western lifestyles have on the environment? we're aware of the damage caused by emissions, maybe even aware that in some parts of the world that damage is fatal to people - but we still drive our cars everywhere, and boo-hoo about gas prices, and claim we're the victims of a 'war on the motorist' (a classic Daily Fail theme)
other people take the hit for us exercising our freedom to drive, to buy useless shit and cover our houses with christmas lights - and the destruction caused is greater than anything done by the Adam Lanzas, Anders Breiviks and Dylan Klebolds of the world. can anyone on this board honestly claim that the evidence for this made them sell their car, cancel that overseas vacation, stop buying consumer crap etc etc?
