I've been working in the military and DoD world for the last 12 years, so a whole LOT.

Prior to that, only a couple.

OK Brian, thanks for telling me I said something I didn't say and trying to connect it to a completely unrelated topic with an opinion that I don't hold. I think you're the one that needs to get a grip on reality here. Why do I say that? Because if you think that banning guns will somehow magically make all the guns out there go away, then you're barking mad. That's what I'm talking about, not the efficacy of gun control or anything like that. I think if you actually read my posts, it might help you understand what I'm saying.

Snippet from an article I just read:
...if this was exclusively an American problem that could be solved by gun control, how does one explain the 18 dead killed by Mark Lepine at Universite de Montreal? What about the 77 dead before the muzzle of Anders Behring Breivik at Utoya Island? What about the 119 killed in Mumbai?

These mass killings were committed by shooters who managed to arm themselves for their killing day in countries which have such stringent controls on firearms that many police officers are not allowed to be armed off duty (and sometimes even while on duty!).
Hmm....

I think the only common sense solution I've heard recently is implementing mental health screenings as part of the process of buying a gun. Sounds good to me.

That's all good and fine, but it still won't stop nutters from getting them. Nothing will. It would help if it weren't sensationalized in the media.

Yeah just like when the government put limits on machine guns, grenade launchers, and bazookas. Tons of nutters still running around with those.

then again, i live in the UK, where everyone believes a 30 round clip can last for a minute and a half on full auto because they saw it in movies
Yes I :olo: about the 30 round clip on auto.

Me, well I have been lucky (I consider) to have fired a range (pun) of weapons in my life but I am/was a responsible gun owner.

Will consider a further response later... Off to dinner now :D

Yeah except mark lepine was 20 years ago and we got tougher gun laws after that happened so you've quoted bullshit. How many mass killings have happened here since? etc. How often do you have mass murders in the USA? Why?

Seriously, you're normally pretty bright Zeke but you're a dribbler on this topic. Seek help.

Why is it that you gun nuts can only resort to retarded straw men?

A gun ban will eliminate new guns from getting out there. There are numerous other ways to collect the guns that are already in the hand's of the public. You make it sound like it's got to be done in one day or not at all. As I said, get a grip on reality.

Besides, mass murders are a relatively small drop in the bucket in consideration to the overall gun crime problem in the U.S.

A large portion of gun crime occurs though issues of say, domestic violence. Fatalities in these cases can be avoided if guns were not in the household since these fatalities are often results of heat-of-the-moment killings rather than any kind of premeditation.

It's often the case that people will visit the issue of gun control as a fallout of mass murder shootings, but totally forget the every day events that don't get much media exposure.

or forget that their own government has killed approx 1,000,000 kids in Iraq since 1991 through sanctions and war, but that's ok because those kids parents aren't on CNN

Oh I forgot I was a gun nut, me and my massive arsenal of ZERO guns. :olo:

I can't believe you actually made that post and thought that it made sense. 1. It wasn't a straw man argument, it was the point of my original post. You really should read what I type, it helps. 2. Yes, a ban will keep new guns from getting out, just like Prohibition kept alcohol from getting out. Just like banning the weed you've probably smoked today made it impossible to get. Right. And I need to get a grip on reality. Gee, recall the "assault weapons ban" from the 90s? Yeah, worked a treat, didn't it? No, no wait, that's right, it didn't do a fucking thing except keep law-abiding citizens from buying newly-manufactured weapons. :dork:

This is something that you really need to comprehend, because it seems to be a major sticking point in your thinking. If guns were banned right now, all that would happen is that the people that don't commit crimes with them would have to give them up. That's fucking retarded and completely ineffective. If you think that legal gun owners are the problem, the you are the one that needs to go look at the statistics and studies, because you're dead wrong.

The other thing that happens if you ban guns? Black market in guns goes nuts and the crime rate goes through the roof. Exactly like what happened with Prohibition and making drugs illegal. That's a fucking awesome solution! Let's say you manage to implement some sort of Nazi-esque gun collection program. Now you've completely disarmed the populace. Thanks for enforcing the police state and giving violent criminals a guarantee that no armed citizen can protect themselves. Brilliant. Wait, you don't have a violent criminal collection program, too? Oopsie.

If only there were other countries on earth we could look to in order to see if bans on guns work. Oh wait there are dozens.

You see this is where you become disconnected with reality and start to sound like a tea-bagger.

But hey, keep not bothering to do ANY research into this topic so you can feel justified in protecting your right to bear arms no matter what the societal cost.

Back to the original question; I know 1.

My great-uncle (I think it's called? my grandfather's broterh) was head of one of the dutchee shooters associations for years and years. he has permits to use any kind of gun and even used to roll his own bullets in his home.
the man never shot anybody in his life, but knows how to use a large number of different handguns and rifles.

Give me a weapon I can eliminate all life on earth with, in one fell swoop.
I promise I won't abuse it, because I'm a reasonable, responsible individual.
Just leave it to my entirely sane judgement what to do with this power.

Oh, I can only take out 28 at a time? Meh, that'll do.

Archaic legislation, meant to fight a hostile government be damned, because not applicable in any way shape or form, I just want me guns!

My uncle has 3 shot guns and my other uncle has a few air rifles

My Mum recently rented a house while work was being done to her new one and that had a secure gun cabinet in the attic. Random.

LawL wrote:In my entire life, counting my entire family and all the people I have ever been or currently am friends with, I have only ever known one person who is into guns. He has a 22 calibre rifle for shooting rabbits and other wild animals on his farm, and he's had it since we were in high school. Every single other family member or friend I have ever had has had absolutely zero interest in guns, and most think people who are into them are a bit weird.
I have a few guns and rifles. I go to the gun range with friends and family pretty often. It's rare to find somebody without a gun; granted, I live in Nevada.
