Any electricians here? __ Capacitor question

My home air con (1 of 2 units) failed the other day and I had the tech out to check.

I shouldn't have been so lazy as I think it is going to cost me plenty.

Short story.
I said I recon it is the capacitor. He was late so I didn't want him looking at everything first.
He went straight to the capacitor and found open circuit.
Didn't have one on the truck to replace so I said never mind, I will fix it.
Like I sad should have done it myself..
Lesson learned.

Anyway, current (pun not intended but welcome) capacitor is a 35uF 370v capacitor and all I can find online is a CAPACITOR, OIL-FILLED,MOTOR RUN, 40UF, 370V, CASE S ROUND


What difference will 3 micro farads make I ask?
Less that 10% difference.
That would be OK wouldn't it?

Guess you've already checked, but is there a part number on the dud capacitor, or a parts list on the manufacturer's site for the AC unit?

The difference of 5uF is so small it will not make a difference. As long as the cap is the same form factor, voltage ( which it is, and is really the most important, over voltaging a cap will blow it up ) it will work.

Also high voltage is >750V, this is low voltage 30-750V As per the CEC anyways

Sorry, should have reported back Yes & no is the answer.

I took the AC compressor covers off yesterday and double checked the values on the capacitor. Went online and found a suitable replacement but in Hong Kong.

Now I did inquire locally last Friday (with the technicians values) and have a shop to attend Monday PM (Sunday AM here at this item)., cost about $30.

Funny. I checked with another AC company Friday and asked they come out (fallback option) but that won't be until next week (busy here - warm weather) and said get the tech to bring one of these (value) capacitors as I suspect it is the problem but call me back with a price first.

That office called back to say the part is some $1500
I suggest they check as it is on the web for like $20 - $40.

Whiskey you wouldn't happen to have a meter would you or know of someone who does? Like a Fluke 87-5 or similar that can read micro farads, as to prove the capacitor is fucked?

If all else fails obviously call an hvac guy, but to save around $150/hr it's worth it to piss around with this thing

Yes, wish I had a late model meter, mine came out of Noah's Ark

I got some electricians at my work that should have those meters and be able to check/prove the capacitor.

Yes fixed & up and running beautifully at 16c, cold air out of the 'head' & hot out of the compressor and now with cold brass fittings externally (before the insulation).

All is good

Like I said, we have sparkys at work & one checked the cap and it was, as he said a dud.
I went to that shop I called last Friday an picked it up for $30 so I save probably $100+ for another visit

The piece o' chit is still doing its job 6 years later.
I didn't get to pick, it was the only one they had that matched specs.
