Well it would have to be stronger than the earth's gravity so that's not necessarily true...

Is he holding a sign that says "I'm here to kill you and rape your wife"? If not, why would someone make such a monumentous leap in logic to come to that conclusion? Because they broke in? How much proof do you need to know that 100 percent of burglars prefer if there's nobody home when they do the deed and aren't there by default to kill you and rape your wife?xer0s wrote:If a guy comes into your house with a knife or gun and plans on killing you and raping your wife, it's not a smart move to have a gun to defend yourself and your family? Damnit, I didn't want to get into this...
Oh wait...I know the answer...because they're stupid and crazy and - since they already hate and distrust their neighbors and anyone who looks funny at them or their property - their first response is to shoot them.
Makes perfect sense if you're stupid and crazy.
And I honestly believe that the people who buy guys for "home defense" WANT to shoot someone. They WANT an excuse. They WANT to feel that power. Just like when kids join street gangs: some of them have no choice and do it to protect themselves but most of them do it because of their personality: they WANT to be powerful, respected and feared. It's no different with gun nuts.
Fucking morons the lot of them...

And this sentence right here is why there is no reason to attempt to have any sort of discussion with you on this subject.GONNAFISTYA wrote:

And as for your statement about people that buy guns for home defense, well, that says a lot more about you than it does anyone else. I know a lot of gun owners and none of them relish the idea of shooting someone. But, you're not going to pay any attention to that fact, are you? No, because all you want to do is rant and feel superior.
Have fun with that.

Wow...look at all the stupid and crazy "what ifs"...which is the ONLY argument that stupid and crazy people can make. No surprise it's all coming from the yanks.
Exactly. And you won't admit that you feel the exact same way but from the opposite perspective Mr.HighAndMighty gun nut. I just said there was no point to discussing it and your response is to post that there's no point in discussing it. You completely ignored my reasons for making the statement - which I freely admitted to - and focused on the comment itself...knowing why I made it. What a fucking moron.Nightshade wrote:And this sentence right here is why there is no reason to attempt to have any sort of discussion with you on this subject.GONNAFISTYA wrote:

You're right...there are a billion situations and the ones you're side of the isle continues to argue are the stupid, implausible situations that never happen. Why do you idiots insist you live in a lawless wasteland similar to Afghanistan? Because you're stupid and crazy.
Re: I'm just going to leave this here...
that's bollocks and you know it - 'most of them' seem to do it because they're uneducated, impressionable and in a bad situation. and it's "your" - haven't seen you do that before, you really do need to calm down.GONNAFISTYA wrote:most of them do it because of their personality: they WANT to be powerful, respected and feared.
don't really know where i'd stand on the home defense thing. of the handful of people i know who own guns (i live in the uk), only one is never more than a hop, skip and a jump away from it and he lives in the middle of nowhere with a lot of expensive farming hardware - seems sensible enough to me, whereas this bloke's a nutter. the gun just made it easy for him - if it had happened in another country and the girl had been on her own then maybe he would've felt that a knife or a bat would've been enough, but he'd still have been sat in that basement, full of impotent fury and dreaming of the days when he could still get an erection.

In the last 2 months I've seen 14 hour-plus documentaries on gangs and what makes them tick (yes...research for work) and every.single.one.of.them skipped around the obvious issue they kept coming back to over and over and over again but didn't want to say outright: a lust for power.4days wrote:that's bollocks and you know it - 'most of them' seem to do it because they're uneducated, impressionable and in a bad situation. and it's "your" - haven't seen you do that before, you really do need to calm down.GONNAFISTYA wrote:most of them do it because of their personality: they WANT to be powerful, respected and feared.
As I've already mentioned (I can quote myself if you like) there are indeed some people in gangs who'd rather not be. They are the minority...and gang members aren't simply "misunderstood sweethearts".
Re: I'm just going to leave this here...
Any chance you could bring up some research ?, some statistics perhaps ?, think saying that everyone buying a gun for home defence is a closet killer might be a bit of a stretch ? :/
What about people buying guns for hunting or hobbies or whatever n all ?

i've visited young offenders institutions, secure facilities or whatever else it is they're calling borstals this week, outreach programs, probations centres, drug support groups, workshops and all that shite. i've been neck-deep in guardian reading do-gooders and good-for-nothing rapists for days at a time. i've even seen an episode of "ross kemp on gangs" - but i've only met a handful of villains or gang members who had any real ambition.GONNAFISTYA wrote:In the last 2 months I've seen 14 hour-plus documentaries on gangs
if 'most' gang members seek power, then they only seek it in so much as 'most' x-factor contestants seek fame - it's a shiny object that could easily be replaced with something else. you're probably right about the people you saw on tv, because they're the sort of people who want to be on tv and because they have myths they need to be seen to perpetuate, but the vast majority of any illegal culture won't want to be interviewed at all.
Re: I'm just going to leave this here...
'Up' is a relative term. You will always consider yourself falling 'down' toward the object that exerts on you the greatest gravitational force. Astronauts on the moon will still consider themselves falling 'down' even though the moon may be high above your head and the astronaut is falling in a vector that you would consider 'up'.Κracus wrote:Also if you create a gravitational force above you, you will fall up.

Re: I'm just going to leave this here...
As far as this discussion goes, there is a big difference between responsible gun ownership and the right given to any crazy yahoo who wants to own a gun. Maybe you want to own a gun so you can go hunting, shoot at a target on the range, or have one locked up in a safe in case there is that one-million-to-one chance Alex DeLarge comes knocking on your door humming Beethoven's 9th... I get that. There will always be a small percentage of sane people out there who will want to own a gun for a reason mentioned above.
The problem is that while there is a small percentage of perfectly reasonable people who want to own a gun for all the right reasons, there is an overwhelmingly large percentage of people who are crazy, paranoid, delusional, racist, redneck, gangbanging, retards who want to own a gun for all the wrong reasons. This is the reason why the U.S. really needs to implement some kind of gun law to prevent the mentally/emotionally unstable from having access to firearms.
Statistically speaking, there is a far bigger chance that a gun purchased for "protection" will be used in the wrong situation simply because there is a greater number of paranoid trigger-happy asshats who think they need protection than there are reasonable people who think they need to prepare themselves for that one-in-a-million contingency. Quite frankly, I would feel safer knowing that the guns were out of the hands of Alex DeLarge than actually owning a gun myself in case he ever shows up.
P.S....

I remember when I had my 10,000th post. Congrats man, you can consider yourself amongst those that have claimed the 10,000th post. (a very sad acheivement) A bit o trivia, the first forum user to reach 10,000 posts was a crazy dude named CrackWhoreMonkey.

Ok, for the sake of fairness when you could have easily found something on your own within two minutes...here's two:losCHUNK wrote:....lol is that a fact ?. The Interrupters
Gangland (Part 1 of 3)
They aren't 5 minute jaunts so whatever "basis in fact" you're looking for you'll have to watch the whole shows. The point I'm making about gang members and how I'm trying to connect them to gun nuts who are paranoid enough to want a gun for protection are one in the same: a need to feel protected, from real or imagined dangers. In gangs, the dangers are usually real. In the case of morons wanting to feel like Dirty Harry, the dangers are in their head 99% of the time.
I'm so fucking sick of hearing "what if" from these idiots...

I've got the Interrupters on watch for later, wether I get through it or not is another story, the 2nd video is about gangland violence only ?, which I think I will skip because I've seen a fair bit on that from all different angles.
I imagine there are people as you describe and probably more than a small percentage, saying that someone who wishes to protect their home with a gun is a closet killer and has the same 'ego?' as someone who is a member of a gang is a big leap though, I'm not so sure your videos could answer that question as with the gangland one atleast, it's only following a select group and doesn't really reflect the wider majority ? and (I assume) does not draw a correlation between gang members and gun owners (for protection).
I'll agree a gun does give you a sense of false security which can lead to bigger problems, but saying that security is through a fear of constant threat can just as easily be argued as someone being brought up in a society that has been taught guns are just like an alarm system but better ?.
