Castle Wolfenstein film

Post by Don Carlos »

It's such a bizarre choice of game to adapt. Not in terms of storyline – if the world needs anything, it's a film about a Rambo knockoff pelting through a castle and blasting through waves and waves of undead mutant Nazis until he reaches a berserk armour-plated robo-Hitler – but in terms of age. Castle Wolfenstein was first released more than 30 years ago. If you want to be picky, you could argue that it sounds as if Avary will actually adapt Wolfenstein 3D, which didn't come out until long after Castle Wolfenstein, but even that's still more than 20 years old. It's the opposite of striking while the iron is hot. It's tapping at an iron that's almost completely rusted away.
My brain just farted.

Read the passages after that quote, I get the impression that it's not meant as criticism:
It's an interesting approach, and it might just work. Until now, video-game movies have been little more than lazy cash-in afterthoughts that exist solely to maximise a franchise's revenue. But Avary has had decades to think about Wolfenstein. He's got to know its plot and its tone and its humour inside out. Perhaps leaving it so long is actually a blessing in disguise

No, I didn't mean it either. That paragraphs was quoted due to the robotic Hitler element.

My brain farted with excitement for that very reason :)

Yes, Robo-Hitlers are good. I just hope they don't puss out on that Hollywood style.

(Doom monsters are from hell, dammit!)

That's kind of the point of the article: he's had 20 - 30 years to play these games so that's a long time to come up with something good for this movie.

But still, I remain skeptical as well.

RTCW is still one of the better single player FPS game experiences I've had. It's an interesting mix of weird science, occult magic and zombies. There is enough of a plot in the game for them to base a movie off of it, though I'll take the movie's success with a giant salt block meant for horses.
