It worked perfectly so I never upgraded and I have no idea what Windowblinds has done since I ditched my XP machine.
you should play with litestep instead. Its' way more fun.

Picked up a retail box for $38 today. Looks cool and honestly isn't such a massive pile of bullocks. I like the built in option to put the app icon on the task bar for the monitor its running on. Start page and desktop plays well with each other in dual monitor mode too.

Email integration is really nice.

I've been using it a bit on a separate box and it is indeed very confusing. Not just because it's new and unfamiliar, but because it seems entirely counter-intuitive. I had to search Google for a way to shut down the computer. At first, I thought clicking on the login portrait thing in Metro would give me the option to shut down (sounds logical) but nope... you have to go into "settings" of all places, "power", and then shut down. WTF?

Then there is the issue of mouse travel on a desktop system. You have gestures that only work on the left side of the screen (switching between apps, closing apps, start screen) and other gestures on the right side (search, share, devices, settings). Doing relatively simple tasks requires you to bounce your cursor back and forth like a ping pong ball. On larger computer screens without the touch interface, this is tedious. Scrolling the Metro interface requires more cursor bouncing. Thanks for the carpal tunnel, Microsoft. Fact is, the entire interface is designed for tablets and it simply doesn't work for keyboard/mouse/trackpad interfaces.

Microsoft is shipping me a copy of Windows 8 Pro but I sure as hell aren't installing it on my workstation. I wish I were allowed to sell it.

Imagine turning on a Mac and booting into Launchpad, then having to click on an app to get to the traditional desktop. This is Windows 8.

Obsidian is right. I launched the Store app and it goes into fullscreen on my 27'' monitor. You have to find the scrollbar on the bottom and scroll alllllll the way over to see categories. Great UI on a 10" tablet, total shit on a desktop PC. Hopefully they make Magic Trackpad drivers for it.

I'm guessing this is going to be another Windows ME/Vista.

pah!

they should have went to the future with this and made it 100% strictly touchscreen , also no ports to encourage more safer/smarter computing like appstores and clouds and all that
it is about time!

My pc booted directly into the desktop. You can press win-c to open charms and alt-tab still works.

My desktop:

Made a couple bat files for reboot/shutdown with pretty icons and always run as admin checked for easier access. Although once I'm pissing about with hardware and drivers and stuff I won't need to use them as often.

So far, the more I get used to it and bend it to my will, the more I like it. Definitely runs quickly and the new file copy dialog/process is much improved.

this right here is the problem

an OS that requires you to make batch files just to do ordinary mundane things like shutting down and rebooting without faffing about is not an OS that inspires great confidence

it doesn't "require" you do do anything..you can just as easily move your mouse to the corner, hit the charm bar and click shutdown or even quicker, hit alt+f4 at the desktop.

I installed this. Not that the new interface is a pain, I just find old habits die hard.

I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that Windows 8 is the worst computing experience I’ve ever had. As a desktop operating system, it’s annoying, frustrating, irritating, and baffling to use. I’ve tried on many occasions to explain exactly why it’s so awful to use day-to-day, and most of the time, smoke starts pouring out of my ears. I thought it would be better to get down exactly what the issues are and why you should avoid it.
from the rest of the article, it sounds a bit like 'android/iOS for desktops' i.e. shittingly shit
that interface reminds me of this

The old control panel is still there, under settings. I think you can still windows-key+R and type control panel.

protip: you can upgrade to win8 pro with that $40 deal even if you are, for some reason, running a pirated version of win7.
