looking for a good color fidelity, high res. monitor

Post by Tsakali »

I found this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6824260028

I know it's a dell but it has a nice resolution "2560 x 1600 " so I'm really interested in that.

Any direction towards an equally priced (or maybe even upwards of $1,500) high res monitor would be appreciated.

7 ms!?! :olo: You've got to be fucking kidding me! Look elsewhere.

How about this one?

Idk what you want such high resolution for. 1920x1080 is what you want for HD videos, next should be 4k.

Is it just for photos? You should have said.

I think you'll find that any Apple monitor uses a panel made by someone else, so you can get a monitor made by them just as good, without the Apple branding that they use to jack the price up way high.

You should just take whatever advice Dulltron gives you. Clearly he's an expert on a number of subjects, including this and is in no way a complete and utter moron.

DTS , I specifically asked for high resolution display...the one you linked to has lower resolution than my current one.
I use photoshop alot, and yes more pixels = less fucking around with windows and widgets. And to make the higher resolution useful, I also need a larger viewing size. I hardly game anymore so 7ms is no biggie.

depends what it's primarily going to be for. iirc the Dell is one of the best if 30" is what you're after (with a price tag to match); all the rest seemed to be inferior brands the last time i checked (for example

btw Dell do a couple of 27" at 2560x1440 for less

Another question, is IPS a solid spec. that can't really be bullshited? meaning if a monitor boasts IPS, does that mean it's pretty good on the color fidelity no questions asked?

that's good to know.
I'll be on photoshop alot and coding editors, so every extra pixel counts,... even on the vertical..., not gaming much really. And yeah, I rather like the larger screen, as long as the resolution is high enough to not make it look like ass. figured a 30" with 2560 pixels across will be a good balance between the two specs.

I have that Dell monitor. It's very nice. The only limitation I have found is HDMI is limited to 1920x1200. You'll need DVI-D or Displayport to get max resolution. I was a bit bummed because I use a HD Homerun device to watch TV on my computer. Some channels have encrypted content that you need HDMI for, so I have to switch to the HDMI port to get this working. First world problem most def.

I heard the anti-glare coating on the Dell's suck balls.

So I bought a 27" LED IPS ACD, a mini-displayport adapter to connect it to my pc video card and downloaded this free Brightness Controller utility for windows. Aside from only having one input its one of the best quality monitors for the price (sub $1000). Most of the nerds in the Display subforum on Hardocp will agree. I don't game on it though, its just my secondary monitor.

IPS is the technology utilized in the panel. They typically give very good colour accuracy, though it can vary on other factors like the type of display processor built into the monitor. They have 6, 8 and 10 bit displays that all quote IPS technology and the colour range varies. In summary, IPS can technically produce a high range of colours, but what the monitor can actually do can depend on other factors. A 6-bit IPS isn't worth buying, IMO. 10-bit is overpriced and most people don't have systems able to utilize it. Try to stick with 8-bit and look up reviews on other factors. I believe there are also different types of IPS technology on the market, but I can't tell you the specifics.

Generally speaking, Apple displays rate the best. Dell Ultrasharps and some of the high end HP monitors also rate quite high and may give better bang-for-buck with additional inputs. Check out reviews for each model and revision, Dell and HP have been known to derp-out on specific models at times (as Shaft mentioned, Dell may have messed up the anti-glare coat on a few displays)

Also, if you're serious about colour reproduction and accuracy, spend the money to get yourself a decent monitor colour calibration kit. Most monitors have absolutely awful default settings, it's a waste of a good monitor if it remains uncalibrated. It's good practice to calibrate your screens every few months.

Dulltron is such a moron, quoting response time like it has any meaning and claiming that 1920x1080 is all you need.

I've got the U2711, which is the 27" version of the newegg link. It's got good blacks, good colours and the res is awesome. The only thing I had to do was up the font size on 2560x1440 because it sits quite far back on my desk and I had to strain to read the text when sitting back in my chair.
