nGlide

Post by Don Carlos »

Do any of you nerd use nGlide for anything? I got my copy of Carmageddon after I received my kickstarter backer code and I was playing away but I could not get it to run in glide/3dfx mode. After some investigating I found nGlide and it is really rather good. While the graphics from that era are certainly not going to set the world alight, it is nice to see some of the older games shown how they were originally intended. Anyway, here is the blurb:

http://www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide
nGlide is a 3Dfx Voodoo Glide wrapper. It allows you to play games designed for 3Dfx Glide API without the need for having 3Dfx Voodoo graphics card.
All three API versions are supported, Glide 2.1 (glide.dll), Glide 2.4 (glide2x.dll) and Glide 3.0 (glide3x.dll). nGlide translates all Glide calls to Direct3D.
Glide wrapper also supports high resolution modes.
Down the right hand side of the website they have small shots of the games that work with it; both Carmageddon games are on there, the original Tomb Raider, Uprising, Turok.....and I guess more importantly for you guys Diablo 2.

There are loads (hundreds) more which can be found here: http://www.zeus-software.com/downloads/ ... patibility

I thought this might be useful to some of you...enjoy :)

Glide was really good in the days of the Voodoo and Voodoo 2 chipsets.

I also remember getting a Diamond Viper II card (after my Voodoo 2) which supported S3TC. There was a patch for both Quake3 which allowed S3TC to be used and had special maps with high res textures in there, which looked fabulous. UT99 even supported it out of the box and had a high res texture set on a separate CD I think.

Ahh, the good ole days.

It makes quite a few older games that were brilliant fun, but a little hard to stomach graphics wise, easy to play again. They offer graphics that you would expect on your phone of perhaps a few years ago but I have found it easy enough to pick up and play stuff without thinking "blergh this is horrible" though perhaps a newer generation of gamer who has not ventured into old school games would struggle.

Shame they go to DirectX not OpenGL, cause DirectX always has a plasticy look.

I was soooo awesome with my voodoo 2. Pretty sure I spent close to $500 on it.
