The system means an "instantaneous" signal (quicker than one tenth of a second) would be sent to the referee when it is detected the ball has crossed the line - faster, in effect, than the assistant referee could flag for a goal.

Without wanting to sound too controversial, if you killed every single football player, manager, club owner, and every single human being who had more than a weekend interest in the game, the world would be either better, or no worse off.

Some people play for the love of the sport and the game. Granted there are very few adults who do this, but for children it's about the game, surely?

Also on the football topic, I have found myself supporting my local team far more over the last 3 seasons than I do any premiership teams. I think because they are local I feel they deserve my time. Newport County don't even play league football but I still enjoy following them.

I actually used to be against it, then after the frequency in which obvious decisions were going other ways, it became a bit of a farce. Thought American footie was full of all this technology though ?, I used to say if they opened the doors to technology in the sport, it'll end up looking like that

Does go into a bit of detail in the article posted, they're planning on using 2 technolgies I think. Hawk eye - which is expensive because it uses 6 cameras to track the ball in flight, using triangulation to tell a computer where it is (I thought Hawk Eye was from Tennis too ?). Then there's GoalRef - which was my idea that was stolen !, and just uses a sensor in the stitching of the ball and goal posts which is cheaper and simpler, the tech they were testing before required the chip to be placed in the centre of the ball.

I'm guessing lower league clubs will be given the option of what they prefer seeing as they're pretty skint already.

(I can't actually remember if it was me who suggested it, or started arguing against someone that I was calling stupid for suggesting it, but either way tis an opportunity missed )

No it won't. A chip is so small and so light that it will not have any noticeable impact on the movement of the ball. It's not like they're strapping a laptop to the side of it.
