That page seems to suggest that you don't need to buy anything to play it. Is that true? Don't you need HL2 or something?

It's not bad. Some of the voice assets are questionable but mostly very well done. It's funny how atmospheric and well-paced it is to this day, as opposed to trying to lengthen games by just throwing waves of enemies for them to pick off from behind waist high concrete.

Always hated HL's combat gameplay. On one hand you glide like a fucking speed skater, but the enemies chip away your health the split second you are in line of sight.

Ooh nice. Always wanted to replay HL1.
Is this an exact replica with better graphics?

Some mechanics have changed. You can pick up/throw things including the turrets. They changed some items so the gameplay is slightly altered.

It is very similar to the original so far though. Enough differences to make it interesting and enough similarities to be recognizable as HL1.

indeed, pretty much the only weapon that's any use at range is the magnum.

Agreed. I'm running around using almost nothing but sg and magnum because anything else takes so long to kill anything that I lose half my health while I'm waiting for them to fucking die.

Started playing today. It's a lot of fun.
Somehow refreshing to play a game with no auto-healing and abundant ammo. Scary as hell, and makes you watch your step. Hehe, I like how a 14 year old game is "refreshing".

Bit disappointed with the graphics; I mean, of course it looks a lot better than the original, but it still looks kind of...flat.
For instance, I don't really see any bump mapping or dynamic lighting going on.
But I think they used the pre-HL2 episode 2-Source engine, which allowed for more eye candy.

I never bothered to play Half-Life past the intro area where the experiment happens and shit blows up.

Looking at the graphics comparison, I honestly prefer the looks of the original over the remake.

I don't know how best to explain it but the remake has a lot of visual noise. There's so much glare and dark areas are overly dark; the monsters are just blobs of shadow with a few glowy bits and you can't really make out what they're supposed to be anymore.

I like the ambient lighting in the original. I prefer the animated water texture over that glassy reflective stuff in the remake.
The soda machines, I prefer the old blurry version. The high-res crispness just adds more noise to the scene.

I might actually have to get a copy of HL now and do a run through it since I never really gave it a chance.

it's amazing that at no point, in spite of all the shit he gets into (and the swimming), does Gordon Freeman ever lose his glasses

he'd be pretty fucked without those. myopia is no joke

Freeman is the original hipster, his glasses are just a pair of empty frames.

He actually had a pony tail in the first Half Life! Not a "man bun", though.
