I won't use either of them, because when I swear, it's in my own dialect, which would be roughly translated to "my fucking balls", or "this feels fucking nice".

As for Armstrong, I'd say something about his accomplishments and say that he'll be remembered and missed.

It's been used for 1000+ years, it was originally used by the Catholic church as part of burial rites, but over the last 1000 years, it has passed into common parlance and is now used idiomatically.

Are you one of those people who cuntishly answers "Why are you sorry?" when someone says they're sorry to hear about your bad news?

Most people either don't know enough about the person, or don't have the creative capacity to form a completely new and poignant statement to eulogise someone, or simply don't care enough, but still feel compelled to show a modicum of respect to the deceased. Hence, 'Rest In Peace'.

Or, you could go deeper and point out the soft music that relaxes someone surely can't be relaxing, because what's relaxing about shards of sound spearing into the holes in the side of your head and penetrating your brain?

For you and me , it may well be. For many of the people that beside the grave of their beloved one, that same phrase has not lost its ethymology, because they still believe that saying "May he rest in piece" refers to his spirit moving to another place where his soul can have an eternal life.

How many people do you know that still say: "For Thor's sake" or "In the name of Zeus"?

If we stop using expressions of condolences like these for a couple of hundreds , maybe thousands of years, things might change for the better.

If I wan't to express condolences to a family member of someone who had just died or is about to be burried , I prefer to say something in the lines of "I've learned alot from him, he always made me laugh, and I will miss him"
