anyone used windows 8 yet?

Post by Tsakali »

lets just ignore the retarded block system, lets just move on to the desktop part.

They seriously removed the transparency on window frames. don't know about you, but that really gets to me...shit just looks 20 years old.. It was said that it was removed for performance issues? Seriously? talk about a step backwards. Way to go and rape desktop pc abilities for a bigger (read: moronic) cause.

Also, how do I get an easy "shut down" button on the desktop part?

Not interested in the slightest. Windows 7 64bit is solid, so I'll upgrade when nothing runs on it anymore...in like 15 years.

looks like win7 will be the new xp, kept alive by the worthlessness of its successor

on a related note, i wonder if google will ever release android as a desktop OS? not that i'm hoping for it; it's a closed platform and the app store blows goats compared to Apple

on an even less related note, google need to sort out their shitty youtube apps

They removed graphical effects cause they slowed down performance?
Windows should be using 3D cards by now, look how powerful the modern cards are.
PC gaming would step up a notch, cause all PCs would already have 3D cards to run the OS.
If M$ weren't a monopoly and weren't such rubbish programmers, that's what they'd do.

My current PC doesn't even have a 3D card and it runs Windows 7. It can play HD video (720p) but Winamp can't even run its visuals (Mlkdrop). An arcade emulator works so I play that.

I used Windows 7 on someone else's PC before and the way they have the graphical effects implemented, you can't change the colours to whatever you want, so I had to switch to Classic mode. "Going backwards"? M$ have never progressed the Windows effects properly; I had better effects and better customisability on a Windows 98SE machine with the officially free version of Windowblinds installed (that was a program that skinnned the GUI). Shame whoever continued the making of Windowblinds later totally fucked up the program so nothing worked properly any more. Then it did match what people online had always been saying about it - incorrectly at the time. I guess despite making at least one version that worked properly and well, the reputation of Windowblinds was too tarnished for it to become really successful.

I used WindowBlinds 4 on XP and made it look and feel like a Mac. It was the first version with hardware acceleration on all the effects. No bullshit...it actually ran faster in some ways than the default shell (confirmed from several reviews and personal experience).

It worked perfectly so I never upgraded and I have no idea what Windowblinds has done since I ditched my XP machine.

Not only is transparency not on, it's not even an option, and that's what really grinds my gears.

btw all I needed to do was create a shortcut that pointed to the shutdown.exe -t -s 00 and now I have a one click shutdown on the taskbar.

The only reason i even tried out win 8 is because I heard it had some cool customizations for dual screens. Which I haven't messed with yet.... we'll see.

Can you change the colours (to whatever you want) in Macs? Screenshots I see are always lighbulb-maximum-screen-brightness white :offended:

mrd, you will have your reason on April 8, 2014.

Windows 7 will be supported until January 14, 2020.

Seems reasonable. I'll likely buy a new computer before then and try out win7. I heard quantum computers are around the bend eh? Trinary-based data and such.

If you're running a computer that was built back when they were selling Windows XP, then XP is great. For everything else, Windows 7 is better (or OS X/Linux).

I can probably score a free version of Windows 8 Ultimate at launch (I got Windows 7 Ultimate from work when it was released), but I doubt I'll install it on my main system. There's nothing in Windows 8 that particularly interests me. I predict mediocre sales not counting those bundled on newly purchased systems.

yes ryoki. the Metro UI.
they introduced it to xbox last year. its a pain.
you also need a Live account to sign in to your computer, rofl?

we're supposed to upgrade soon. we still on Win7 64 which is rock solid.

speaking of repeating mistakes. what genius thought it a good idea to build another layer of GUI on an OS? the entire reason why win95/98 was so unstable was because it was basically a DOS shell.
now theyre doing the same with Metro.

I thought the Metro UI would work well for a touch based interface (smartphones/tables) but I had the (dis)pleasure of using a WP7 phone recently and it's just terrible.

The start page only shows 6 tiles which is just not enough. The tiles also are animated, which is my biggest gripe with the whole thing. The trouble is that you can't instantly recognize the meaning of a tile. You have to memorize the entire animation of the tile to quickly find what they're about and at first use, that's just very confusing.

For example, there was a tile for the market place, where you buy new apps. And while it would show the market place icon once in a while, it was basically a slideshow through images of the most popular (I think?) apps. The first time I saw the tile there was a Pacman logo on there and I thought the Pacman game was installed on the phone. Later on, I thought about trying that Pacman game but I was unable to find it again, until some time later when I accidentally ran into the Pacman logo on the tile again and I realized what was going on.

Also, their whole market place app is terrible. You swipe through screens from left to right but every screen has a completely different layout, even though they show the same type of data (the list of popular apps looks completely different to the list of featured apps).

Also, you see the edges of the previous and the next screen to the left and right edges of the screen, which really clutters up the whole interface and it's hard on the eyes.

Anyway, with that Metro experience I fear Windows 8 won't be much better. I even contemplated buying a MS Surface tablet when it was first announced, but the reports about the price and the experience I have with Metro put me off.
