You have time off work, they ask for Doctors' certificate. .

Post by Whiskey 7 »

When you have time off from your normal everyday work for a day, a week, a month and Management ask for a Doctors' certificate does it need to have the reason for you absence from work?

Here and previously it just said "unfit for usual occupation", but lately companies are asking for more detail.

I suggest my medical problems are personal and none of their business but accept, if it affects my (usual) performance when I return they should be advised.

You know, one or two days off with a tummy bug doesn't affect your normal work, but loosing a leg might kind of reasoning.

Just asking what is the norm or accepted about the world and interested :D

I don't get asked for anything, but you could always tell your doctor to scribble something about ebola, dissociative identity disorder, or some other disturbing disease.

AFAIK in Canada, if you miss two or more consecutive days you'll need a doctor's note and you need it during the first days...not waiting to get it after you've returned to work.

Just show your boss a picture of your carpet installation and he'll give you a full year off with pay.

I have and he didn't :olo:

Seriously, here in Oz, generally after two days you need a certificate or documentation from a Doctor type of person and they usually 'scribe "unfit for usual" but seems like business (broadest term) are now asking why you are ill.
I suggest now even the Doctor doesn't know unless it is obvious, heart attack, electrocution, flu like symptoms. You understand I am sure.

If I tell my employer through my Doctor of how I fell (suicidal/homicidal/pathetic) it surely influences Management :!:

Are you going to kill your boss and then take your own life because you need to have your leg amputated, Whiskey? Spill it. :offended:

No, not thinking that at all.
Interesting as the amputated legs came to mind because of recent shark attacks off the west coast and some gruesome pictures I stumbled/tumbled upon on the 'net.

No I am not thinking ill of the boss.
Good luck to them/him/her.
I surrender as it is not worth the pain and I truly believe karma is wonderful :!:  What goes around comes around for sure.

We just have different personality traits, obsessive/compulsive vs passive/aggressive.
google to understand.

PS: Don't mention the carpet :disgust:

Yeesh, you must've raped and butchered at least a 100 people or something to deserve that awful carpet installation.

If you're depressed then it would be well worth picking up whatever local information you can and acting on it right away (e.g. agencies that can help, your employment rights). Had a few mates go through depression and they've all said that it can drag on/recur for a while - so with a bit of foresight/planning at least you can relax and enjoy it.

Wow, over here, no one is going to ask for a doctor's note even if you're sick at home for a week. In fact, employers aren't allowed to ask for details about your ailment.

All, thanks all as I was interested :D
Just seems like a little too much is expected here but maybe I am sensitive atm

4days - Yes I am following that path as suggested as someone somewhere recently said don't return to work until you're sure you're better or be prepared for quite a fall again :tear:

not entirely true. they are allowed to send a doctor to your house to see if you're in fact too sick to work.
luckily the threshold is very low, and they only do it if you're sick like 3 times a week

True, but that doc is not allowed to share any details about your condition without your consent, only if you're fit to work or not.

I'm not going to deny that. Employees are very well protected here. The whole health thing is reasoned from the idea that health and medical issues are private affairs. Doctors are never allowed to share medical data about patients without the patient's consent. I think that last thing is true pretty much world wide isn't it?

To be honest, to us Dutchees the American way of dealing with employees seems appaling at times. The idea that all it takes to get fired is some powerhungry boss snapping his fingers and saying that you're fired seems just idiotic to us.

But the scale tips the other way as well. Sometimes it seems to be terribly hard for an employer here to get rid of a moron employee who sits on his ass doing nothing useful all day as well.

OK I will try and push that here and let you know how I venture.

I have asked my Union (employee body/organization protecting our rights & frequently fighting employers) re same and they confirm patient's right to confidentiality. Look, I really can't tell my boss/ employer it is them causing my illness, and I do intend to "get over it". Just take time :!:

I still trust, even today that health and medical issues are private affairs.
